I'm trying Avena Sativa for concentration/focus problems. I've tried modafinil, Selegeline, currently trying Dextroamphet too soon to tell. I just got a smaller cap machine then read a few study reports saying 800 to 2400 mg have been used in studies. But I don't know the veracity of the claims made there. They said that positive improvements were made in  elderly subjects at 8 to 1600 mg dosages. So I could have used my 00 machine. Least of my worries. I'm not depressed or prone to it and no history of it. The Dextroamphet is a dandy mood elevator and lets get busy but no change in focus so far a 5 mg twice a day.

I keep trying all these powders and compounds and nothing works so far. Been to 2  neuroligists and a psychologist  all say no to ADD. I don't care about letters I just want to be able to play all the way thru a song I know, with out arriving at a mental blank page. Or be able to begin a task and not get sidetracked into four other things needing doing.

I'm not in a scholastic environment but taking classes on line and private lessons once a week. I can play ok but not for very long with out errors. I was always that way a little but not like this and it's worrying me a bit. It's not the end of the world but I've been a musician for 50 years and I don't like the idea of no longer doing it. I have plenty of other things I do that bring a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction but I'm not getting in my first love these days.

Anybody got something that works. My Dr, is willing to let me try things one at a time w/ a 30 prescription. What works?

Ron

Ron,

I have found Avena Sativa to be helpful.  I learned more about it from this source and article:

Hello thanks for the link. I have since come across some  more information on Avena Sativa in lit. from the Life Extension Foundation. For better or worse, my wife and I have been using their products since the 80s.

Like your link these people are selling what they report on. I've always been a little uneasy about that. However there is an extensive list of the sources for their claims. In their zeal to inform people about their products they sometimes LIE. i.e. their claim that the FDA [for whom I have little respect] prevents people from getting Deprenyl unless they already have manifestations of cognitive decline. That is not the case. There are two 5mg tabs dissolving in my mouth as I type. I just asked my Dr. for a prescription and he wrote it. At the recommended dose of 10 mg per day for those over 70 I found ZERO increase in focus or concentration. So I'm tying a higher dose to see if anything changes.

The info LEF  presents on Avena Sativa contains a little more of their ZEAL. They call it something else and infer that only their version of it produced the impressive results in animal and people studies. This can be true but it's misleading.

That said, it is very safe to say they are not alone in their use CORPORATE tactics to infer, obfuscate, and misrepresent the facts to make the bottom line come out ok. I will say one more thing in the LEF's favor. My wife has been a brittle type 2 diabetic since 1973. And she has not had any of the often associated problems with loosing limbs or neuropathy or blindness. We don't use all of LEFs products but she is doing very well considering the damage that normally accrues over such a long period of blood sugar readings several times a day that look more like an EEG read out. [Radical peaks and valleys]

In light of your info and what I've come across I'm going to continue with the oat grass extract to see what happens.

If you feel like it.... can you talk about your experiences with this herb.

Ron
