A friend of mine recently went to the dentist and was informed that she has a few cavities. Are there any methods short of drilling that can treat cavities? Myabe xylitol or some antibacterial agents?

White tea and stevia kill oral bacteria. Xylitol make it difficult for bacteria to adhere to the teeth and gums.

If she does end up getting fillings make sure that she gets white composite resins. Aside from being more aesthetic, they are much healthier than "silver" amalgams. Composed of 50% elemental mercury, the mercury slowly vaporizes and wears away whilst being ingested. Several countries are now banning, or in the process of banning, amalgam as a public health hazard (i.e. Sweden and Germany for example). The official ADA stance is amalgams are safe.

This is funny as they were brought before a California court and took the stance that they neither give the amalgam to the dentist or place the amalgam in the mouth. Squarely setting up a precedent of absolvment of liability in any legal case. In California it is state law to notify the patient that amalgam is a known neurotoxin before placing it in the mouth.
