I heard something about magnesium stearate making a biofilm and that's a reason it's disliked.

A biofilm is a matrix of microorganisms that develops on surfaces. Plaque on teeth is a biofilm. The pink or black growth around a bathtub is a biofilm. That said, I don't know why or how magnesium stearate is related to biofilms.
