I'm posting this here, because this was one of his favorite haunts.

niner went from being one of the most prolific contributors, member and moderator, to non-existent.  Does anyone know what happened?  I for one, miss his knowledge sharing, informative posts and sense of humor.

He is just taking a break and doing fine. He might return in the near future.

Hey Mind, thanks for posting that.  Any on-line forum is only as good as its members and contributors; niner made this a much better place. I look forward to his return.

I've been tempted to post this same question myself.  Glad to hear that he's doing fine.  Was beginning to wonder if he'd met with foul play.   :|?

Thanks for posting this APBT -- I was wondering the same, and even sent him a pm to check what's up. He didn't respond so deepened intrigue. Niner's thousands of posts are consistently solid, well-grounded and researched, and he's friendly, a chemist who refreshingly doesn't take his atoms too seriously.

This forum is definitely less vibrant and alive without N's writing. I'm happy to hear he'll be back, and hasn't yet given up on the lifespan extension quest -- this bizarre virtual windmill tilting toward infinity.

I would be surprised if he returns. A lot of good posters have left probably for similar reasons and I suspect hangs out somewhere else. Quite a few of us have had unnecessary run ins a couple of years ago: there were wholesale deletions of many useful posts from excellent contributors which were deemed to have strayed too far off-topic. As you can imagine it angered people to see their work spontaneously deleted, without warning or apology, the ensuing conflicts I suspect steered them out of the community to less draconian forums. Respectful moderation is fine, but it was overly-authoritative.  The community is much the poorer and when considering the aspiration of the site, it is quite remarkable that conditions developed to the point where such knowledgeable folk felt compelled to leave. There were and are a broad range of very bright people here, some difficult, but you want to keep them here bouncing ideas of each other, that requires a congenial firmness, which was very much lacking. Things appear to have changed, but unfortunately rather late.

There was I believe a c60 private user group possibly yahoo someone posted a while back. It was posted on the c60 forum, if anyone cares to provide a link that would be great. I never got round to try and join, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is there.

Unfortunately, I suspect what happened to him happened to many posters. The quality of the forum has gone way downhill. We have users that are allowed to post runaway nonsense that is unsupported, and in many cases, completely wrong. That tends to drive people like him away imo (and myself)

I don't know.  There are still plenty of worthwhile discussions.  You just have to separate the wheat from the chaff.  And niner was pretty good about avoiding the chaff.

the forum has gone downhill for many reasons. i dont want to compile a list now of all the wrong doings by the moderators involved with the forum right now, but a lot of problems with bad management occur here. i filed a lot of complains and mods do not acknowledge any of them. not even sure if their PM works or if they are even coming here at all.

i personally moved to reddit nootropics for better discussions. its always active, with hundreds of contributors. maybe take a look at them and figure out why its such an active community in comparison to this one? another reason out of many is the harsh treatment of new comers. they prevent you from contributing or posting anything for extended periods of time and i noticed anyone with 3-4 posts, just stops coming. i addressed this issue with the mods who never responded, probably left themselves or just dont care about this forum at all. another issue is the voting system. its suppose to be a forum of discussion and not popularity contest giving stars or voting down and abusing people based on their opinions. maybe use facebook to like or dislike posts, this is a nootropic community just sharing their opinions on various issues.

anyway, i can keep going and going but i wish some more responsible intelligent mods are put in control here

I agree, he was always very positive about the community, the quality has dropped off, but its never been a more interesting time to experiment, which is all the more a shame he isn't here to contribute.

its likely he probably got one of those bad batches of supplements that i, once a while, manage to find articles on and distribute around for your viewing pleasure. it happens to the best of us. just a bad batch of a supplement. we all go around trying to get healthy and long living and we end up with someone's messy business plan model stuck down our throat. oh well, what to do but move on and buy the next most promising, best reviewed on amazon and the next door guy's blog supplement and try to be healthier and stronger than ever before!!!

The forums in general have been reduced their activity thanks to the new platforms of social networks such as facebook groups.

It is a trend that is understood under the framework of social changes derived from technology. The "liquid" modernity.

Unfortunately the forum is in my opinion the most organized and serious way to share knowledge on a subject.
About Reddit: there are more posts and comments, but the content is not always the best, sometimes I am surprised how certain r / longevity users make comments as if they had not read anything previously about longevity. That is the virtue of the forums, the knowledge is organized and consolidated in each comment. I have learned and found more valuable information here than in other places.

In r/longevity nor facebook groups you don't have subforums. There are several threads everyday some with 1 or 2 comments, others are simply news that do not pose any interesting discussion or any novelty.

Well what happens ins people discover this site in their 30s and think they will follow "this" and "that" regimen and take "this" and "that" supplement/drug and prolong their youth. Then it doesn't happen and they age like everyone else. The luster of the site loses its appeal. The promise of the site diminishes.

The only things that I have seen that work are some things people will never purchase:

Anabolics are wonderful for restoring and retaining muscle! But also illegal around most of the work so you need to go underground.

HGH and HGH releasing peptides have helped me in ways hard to quantify. But yet people here are anti-HGH.

BPC157 for soft tissue injuries

Dasatanib in higher doses than people here take for removing scenescent cells.

Tudca for liver health

Everything else such as C60 and Stearic Acid is like, maybe its doing something and maybe it's not.

Then you have wackos on this site! Someone named Daredevil would re-used needles twice and wonder why he got infections when he was injecting GDF11 as (in his words) as "a pick me up" or something like that. In case anyone doesn't know, GDF11 is a analogue to myostatin and this guy was using it like caffeine.

Then you have people who no matter what is bothering someone, such as ED for example, and will come out and boldly claim "oh yeah just take same dandelion with garlic and issue solved".

Then you have certain people I won't name who are 32 years old and dress like a 20 year old, maintain a body weight of a teenager, wear their hair as a teenager, go out of their way to fool people about their real age and claim to be be the first person in the history of humanity to slow down the ageing process. Well, I've got pics of myself in my mid to late 30s when I was a pack a day smoker that make me look 25 years old. So you've got idiots like this one idiot in the youthful look section or whatever it is claiming he has slowed down the ageing process because he is 32 and people think he looks 20s.

Then Meatsauce was reselling the FOXO4 peptide in re-used sandwhich baggies.

People here jump on bandwagons faster than I have ever seen! Anything new that was once tried someplace by someone on one mouse and they are spending hundreds or thousands on something they dont know if it works or if is causes cancer.

There is a lot bad info here. But you've got to read through it and do things that actually work.

Sorry if I sound like I talk crude, but I was born and raised in Detroit. That's how I am: blunt.

I've got a different perspective. For me its neither individuals off (I like diversity), nor healthy youngster getting disinterested. But that LongeCity has attracted far too many which come here for their psychiatric issues, with not that much interest in longevity. Really no problem with that as such, but it has become too much of a ghetto.

Long gone are the days where one could post any bio-chemical question, and such members as @niner would give a quick and precise answer. I'm not surprised such dedicated members make themselves rare - the ratio between those giving answers to those asking, or even worse, ridiculing for asking questions (or answering) has definitely become screwed.

And of course, that would be the duty of moderators to prevent LongeCity from becoming such hostile a place (of which your post with not much more than a litany of personal attacks is a prime example). Which might also be explained with too few moderators, and therefore time-restraint. The idea to encourage self-moderating with a rating system designed for mobbing - and probably intended for taking workload off moderators - has back-fired.

But whenever a online community due to too much hostility is ceasing, others will rise.
