I'm new to the forum so first of all "hello".

My first question (other threads are forthcoming) is how long does it take for Vitamin D to build up in your system and level off? The reason I ask is not only out of curiosity but also because I want to know when I should take my Vitamin D test to see what my levels are. I started taking 4000 IU last week based on the latest research I've read here and elsewhere. How long should I wait to test?

While I'm on the topic, what changes (if any) have you guys & gals noticed from your Vitamin D supplements?

Hi houstonguy76, welcome to Longecity! I'd give it at least a month, maybe six weeks before testing. D has a pretty long half life, so it will take a while to equilibrate. If you get an unusual amount of sun before you test, that can affect the results. I don't know that I've felt anything, but then you can't really feel "not getting cancer or osteoporosis".

Thanks, I'll wait a couple months before testing. While we're on the topic, is it possible for vitamin D to accumulate over time to toxic levels even if you take the same consistent dose each day? I'm wondering if I have to worry about getting my levels tested every year or so to keep on top of it given that it's fat soluble and not like vitamin B where your body simply urinates what it doesn't need.

Greetings, I'm new as well "Hi Everyone!". I had my blood test about 2 months ago and my Dr said he had never seen someone with as low a Vit D count(8.9?)...to much office time perhaps...He prescribed 50,000 IU's taken once a week and it will be a month of those on the 13th(which is my check in appointment with the Dr)...it does feel as though I get slightly uplifted. The topic at the local Vitamin Warehouse is whether or not the synthetic Vit D is as good as a "non" synthetic D...

Wow, what prompted you to take the vitD test - just curiosity?

Are you talking about the "dry" vitamin D2? It is NOT very effective. Natural sources of vitamin D3 in an oil based softgel are the way to go. My vegan coworker took high doses of synthetic D2 for months and she was still deficient. She broke her strict vegan rules and started taking D3.

I was taking the "Now" Vegetarian, Dry Vitamin D2 -1,000 IU -High Potency. That was just before the results from the blood test. The Dr prescribed ones are Vit D2 1.25MG "PADDOC" (?) -They are the softgel style.

Will the 1.25MGs build up my deficiency? Or should I be supplementing these with a D3 -OR will it just be too much for my body to absorb?

I did the blood test because when I started reading about supplementation etc. on here it was suggested to start with a blood test to establish a baseline and build in where you were deficient(or desired performance).

All my other results were stellar -he said my cholesterol levels were beyond perfect... -Vegetarian -ovolacto(10 years) age: 28, Female, 124 lbs, fairly active.

huh. Interesting. I guess as much as I've been researching things, I hadn't given much thought or research to the types of Vit D...I figured..."hey if the Dr's scripting it...and it's a vitamin...it must be the right thing!"

Lesson learned! Heading to Vitaglo/Vitamin Warehouse in the morning for D3!

Thanks for the info!
