Ill go ahead and say that long distance running is the best cardio in my opinion, and no i am not a long distance runner

from what I understand the human cardiovascular system is highly able to handle long distance running and that is a big part of how humans evolved, and no doubt i feel the best when I am consistently running, I wish I just woke up in a field everyday and had to run for 10 miles to get water and bring it back for my family for breakfast..ya dig?

in pre-industrial times if you did not live within close vicinity to water, there was no food, and you did not live...thus there was a LOT of walking and running

Isn't cardio exercise itself an exercise :)
So it is itself the best exercise to perform :)

I think that you should look into Sprint 8 (also called Peak 8). There is a video overview here and a demonstration here if it interests you.

Bikram yoga totally does it for me -- gets the heart pumping and releases all the toxins.  Plus my old joints bend so much easier and I'm much more limber now than I was before...

Swimming is extremely good for your cardiovascular system. In fact, it will take a while of training before you will even tax your muscles that much. Your cardiovascular system will need to improve to supply your muscles with enough oxygen. It can give you more endurance in almost anything else you do that's aerobic. Ask any non-swimmer who thinks they are in great shape and ask them to swim even 50 meters, and they will probably be very out of breath. The big thing I don't like is all the chlorine gas and other toxic chemicals you're breathing in at the surface of the water.

Swimming is no doubt a wonderful exercise not only for physical fitness but also for mental betterment . Most of the people do it for losing their weight rapidly . Another good exercise for losing weight and for fitness is Running . It also loses more calories and increases blood circulation in body .

Running is a great choice for a variety of reasons:

  • It doesn't require special equipment (except some quality shoes)
  • You can can do it just about anytime, anywhere
  • It's high impact, which helps build strong bones and connective tissue
  • It gets your heart rate up more quickly than low or no impact exercise
  • It helps you burn serious calories, especially if you add hills, sprints or try interval training.

I can't recommend the best single exercise for cardio, but I can recommend the best way to get cardiovascular fitness: variety. You ought to be doing resistance training, and high-intensity interval training, and endurance training, using multiple muscle groups. You should do some exercises you can keep up for at least an hour, some exercises you can only keep up for 20-25 minutes with occasional 15-30 second breaks, and some exercises that tire you out in a few minutes (like intense weightlifting or high-intensity interval training).

That way your heart (and other muscles) will be trained for long-term stamina, short-term power, and medium-term mixed oxidative/glycolytic workouts hovering around the anaerobic threshold. (BTW, mixed routines are also great CNS workouts, as long as you feed your brain well.)

If you're doing it right, and you keep it up for enough months, your sitting/lying down heart rate will be 60 or less when you're calm. If it's 70 or higher, do more exercise and more types of exercise. That CrossFit program mentioned above is a total ass-kicker, but it appears dramatically effective. Perhaps you're not interested in that exact program, but please do notice how they include exercises of all types and durations.

Jogging and Swimming. Swimming doesn't put much stress on your body and it works out the whole body.

I think I get what you are getting at, but I would qualify it by type of sport.  Probably some of the best things you can do are sports like basketball, water polo, paintball, etc., that involve vigorous functional, unpredictable, and varied movement.  Other activities like hiking on uneven terrain also come to mind as beneficial.  I don't personally think that track running, long distance running, swimming back and forth in lanes, or biking are all that good for you - they just invite repetitive stress injuries and muscle imbalances.  And contact sports like football, rugby, or hockey mostly do more harm than good unless you enjoy concussions and ripped ligaments.

Boxing exercises such as foot work, shadow boxing, punching the bag and calisthenics seem to be just the right amount without going overboard and becoming catabolic to muscle maintenance.

I like the insanity program from shaun T. Very fastpace and get a lot done in a short amount of time and I suspect it has a similar effect as as HIIT ( increased BMI) and it claims to burn 1000 calories each workout , but that depends on how the individual performs.

No equipment needed except a TV and dvd player.

I'll throw rowing into the mix.  Rowers are generally very healthy and have great Vo2 max scores perhaps second only to cross country skiers.  It's non-impact and so it easy on the joints and it involves almost all the muscles of the body (legs, core, arms, chest, back).  It does however involve access to a rowing club or purchasing an appropriate indoor rowing ergonometer (aka erg).  Concept 2 or Waterrower?

I like it as an alternate exercise activity to running when it's cold out or raining.   In the running off season, I allow my knees to heal from the pounding of running (micro-damage?) and focus on rowing instead.  It works for me.

Yes, those would be the best, IMO. Becoming a competent amateur in one sport is a nice challenge and will keep you interested. However, mixing up some of your exercise and sports throughout life is probably a good practice as well.

Yes Cardio exercises are the best for the health and fitness improvement.
The more effective cardio exercises for the fitness improvement are the jogging, running, swimming, cycling, and jumping a rope.

Hello my friend,I think everyone here is stating a type of training and in my opinion this is wrong.Well in my opinion everybody is different and we cannot know what is best suited for you.So all I can do for you is to give you a main idea. Here is the MAIN IDEA:cardio is ment to keep your heart rate high but NOT TOO HIGH,you want to use about 70% of what you can give FOR LONG TIME,think of it like JUST beeing able to speak but your breath has really got to come out of your mouth..All in all try everything:swimmin, cycling, running, climbing or whatever you can think of,just follow that main idea, after finding what is best suited for you then you can change a little bit the main idea to to your favor!! Hope i helped

I would say hands down, running. Not only is it good for my body and heart, its good for my brain. Cardio exercise is the only thing that will form new brain cells so I'm definitely in for that. Plus, running is something that I could use outside of the gym. Not much use for the elliptical or stationary bike...
