I'm trying to do the iodine cleansing protocol for removing toxic halides from the body, but noticed that taking any amount of iodine causes me insomnia. I've tried both pill and liquid forms (Iodoral, Lugols 2%, Detoxadine) and they all have caused me sleep issues. I've been taking the necessary companion nutrients as well so that's not the issue.

I'm quite sure I am iodine deficient.  I also believe I'm somewhat Hypothyroid, just a little bit.

Insomnia is a symptom of hyperthyroidism.

Iodine can cause insomnia. Many try taking it early in the day to avoid affecting sleep. As iodine results in the release of excitatory neurotransmitters, you could try (temporarily) taking something before bed that enhances GABA or serotonin. What companion nutrients are you taking?

Iodine initially/briefly affected my ability to sleep, but that eventually went away. Now, it sometimes makes me sleepy.

2g Vit C, 400mg Magnesium, 200mcg Selenium plus standard multi vitamin.

I've pretty much tried every popular sleep aid supplement. Only thing that works for me is Doxylamine Succinate which I continue to take every day. But if I take iodine, then it'l interfere with my sleep regardless of sleep aids.

What dosage of iodine were you taking daily and how long did it take for the insomnia issues to finally go away?

Did you do any salt flushing early on? What about 500 mg niacin + 100 mg riboflavin (ATP cofactors)? How much iodide/iodine are you taking? What multivitamin? On another note, 3-6 grams vitamin C is typically what's recommended.

I took 300 mg (three hundred milligrams) Lugol's early on. Any sleep issues went away after a few days.

I did salt flushing for the first few days or so when I actually had detox symptoms (diarrhea, nausea), but I no longer have any detox symptoms when taking iodine, which is weird because there's no way my body was cleansed that fast. Most people report they feel more energy or just better overall when taking iodine, but I don't feel any different mentally wise. One thing I did notice that iodine had an effect on was my erection quality, so I guess it's good to know it actually did something.

Yeah I took the ATP cofactors as well. Multivitamin was Vita Jym. I started with 12.5mg and ramped up to 200mg after around a week before stopping due to the insomnia. Dosage wise, 12.5 mg felt the same as 200mg (didn't feel any different taking iodine).

I actually took a iodoral tablet yesterday (12.5mg) and surprisingly didn't have any problems sleeping, so I'm going to keep bumping up the dosage until I notice any sleep issues.

How long were you taking 300mg for? That's dangerously high if taking for an extended period of time. Read a post here saying at that dosage it can cause blindness.

For a few weeks. Eventually, I switched to potassium iodide (325 mg providing ~250 mg iodide).

There are at least two mechanisms by which iodine can cause insomnia.

One is that it can increase thyroid hormone levels. Thyroid is stimulating, so too much can interfere with sleep. This is easy to confirm with a blood test.

Iodine can also cause the body to release bromine that may have been sequestered due to previous exposures. The result can be a toxic overload that can interfere with sleep. If this is what's happening in your case, the solution is to start with a very low dose -- a micro-dose if you have to -- and slowly work your way up.
