When it is too late:
Megadosing vitamin C every 2-3 hours. with some zinc possibly
Try Noni and Samento (there are some impressives studies done in eastern europe)

To prevent the flu you should boost your immune system. From my protocol:
-Vitamin D3 (i would say at least 2000 IU a day) is particulatly good at preventing the flu.
-Samento (or generic cat's claw) is also great.
-Reishi/shitake mushrooms (or even better AHCC, but very expensive)

I would recommend Echinacea extract. Recently I had a flu/sore throad. A friend recommended Echinacea liquid extract and it worked very well for me.

Echinacea is a very good immune booster.

I would second Echinacea, I take it when my wife or kids are sick as a preventative measure or if I'm starting to feel like I have a borderline cold and it usually goes away.

Not getting drunk and/or getting enough sleep are also good preventative measures.

Beer, Mitkat. It's a panacea. Also television. But only if you are drinking.

Aside from that, zinc lozenges really do work for me, if it's a cold. Not for intestinal problems though. Right now there's an intestinal thing and a couple colds running around the east coast. Everyone I know has had one or more of them. I have little kids in the house, so needless to say I've had them all.

Hope your feeling better.

I take large doses of elderberry extract at the first sign of a viral infection and seemed to have had good luck with that. Clinical studies have shown it effective at inhibiting the replication of vertain viruses including influenza A and B.

AHCC even does something against bird flu! I'm stockpiling some for use during a pandemic (and sticking with Diamond V XPC for everyday use.)

For example, mice treated with AHCC 7 days prior to infection with the influenza virus exhibited increased survival, enhanced immune cell activity, more rapid recovery and a less severe infection. Even more impressively, mice treated with 100 times the 50% lethal dose of the avian influenza virus showed up to a 30% survival rate, as compared to 0% survival in mice not given AHCC. Even in mice with suppressed immune systems, AHCC improved survival following infection with a number of opportunistic pathogens including Klebsiella pneumonia, Candida albicans and antibiotic resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus.

Supplementation with active hexose correlated compound increases survival following infectious challenge in mice.

Active hexose correlated compound (AHCC) is a fermented mushroom extract that is promoted for immune support. This review focuses on results from in vivo studies evaluating the effects of AHCC supplementation on survival and the immune response to a variety of infectious agents, including influenza virus, avian influenza virus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Candida albicans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Supplementation with AHCC appears to modulate immunity and increase survival in response to acute infection and warrants further investigation.
