Hey Duke, do you take Cocoa in a pill (Jarrow) or dark chocolate (Lindt) or Dutch unprocessed, unsweetened and drink it? I really want to increase my intake of cocoa but am trying to figure out the best way.

Jarrow's is standardized for stimulants, not polyphenols. Better options are Solaray's (160 mg polyphenols) or LEF's (130 mg polyphenols.)

Should I buy this?

VitaBlue Wild Blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) 130:1 extract (fruit) [std. to 40% Total Phenolics by UV (20 mg) and 12.5% Anthocyanins (6.25 mg)] 50 mg **

CocoaGold Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) extract (bean) [standardized to 45% polyphenols (50 mg)]

It's cheaper to get blueberry chemicals from actual blueberries. Last night I ordered this. It's not available at iHerb yet, and is backordered at LEF until the end of the month. If you need something now, try this.

BMP-7 is one of the most promising agents to reverse kidney damage, but it hasn't yet been tested in clinical trials. ;)

Johnson & Johnson had an exclusive license for therapeutic use of BMP-7. It gave it up this year. It might have to do with potential nasty side effects. BMP-7 was seen to inhibit apoptosis of some types of prostate cancer cells.

Yes another reason why I am pretty sure my liver is "happy". I wasn't aware that AGE preventing agents and breakers could positively affect renal function (any references?) seems logical though. Antioxidants (including Milk Thistle) were the only pro kidney supplements I could find that had anything to back them up.

Hi there,

Take a look at Co-Q10. There is a study for this indicating reduced incidence of hemodialysis with patients that have chronic renal failure. I think the dosage was only 100mg a day.

This thread was bound to bring out a few hypochondriacs as well as a few members pushing their newest and latest must have supplement. This thread however is about harm minimization which is pretty straight forward IMO.

1. Do not megadose supplements where there is no long term chronic dosing data available
2. Do not experiment with medications without consulting an open minded doctor
3. Be very careful using research chemicals still in clinical trials
4. Get blood work done
5. At minimum, use home diagnostics such as blood pressure, heart rate, weight and BMI to keep tabs on your health.
6. Report anything unusual to your doctor
7. Take breaks from supplementing and medicating. Especially with substances that don't have info on long-term use
8. If you are experiencing negative side effects or anything unusual see your doctor and stop supplementing
and so on

I would remove BMI from that list as it is completely worthless for active, healthy people who lift weights and/or are athletic.

I take the LEF product with blueberry, pomegranate, and cocoa polyphenols, but I also eat 20-25 grams of dark chocolate (at least 72%, I try for 85%) a day as well.

It's much more satisfying than a pill. ;)

totally agree mikeinnaples.

My BMI is almost overweight because I have put on quite a bit of muscle. I'm still sitting at 10% BF
