Calorie restriction, for those who have been on mars for the last decade, aims to improve one's health an slow the rate aging. There are many suggested ways that this is thought to happen. The following are thought to be mechanisms by which CR acts to improve health and slow the rate of aging:
- hormesis
- reduction in free radicals/glycation
- insulin signalling
- Activation of SIRT1
- and so on...
What about calorie restriction, by increasing energy expenditure as opposed to calorie restriction by diet. This seems like the better option to me. Restricting the calories in the diet essentially decreases opportunities to get essential nutrients. For example, if my daily calorie requirements were 2500kCal and I reduced this by 20% then that means I need to fit all my essential nutrients into 2000kCal instead of 2500kCal. Now I know that most people on CR have very structured diets that are nutrient dense but doesn't it seem like an easier option to open up (increase) more opportunities by increasing energy expenditure through exercise whilst not increasing calorie intake. For example, as above my requirements are 2500kCal and instead of restricting the diet by 20% (i.e 500kCal) I simply exercise and expend 600kCal in the day whilst maintaining my normal intake. That's still a negative energy balance of 20% however I now have a larger place to fit my needed nutrients.
So let's say we call this CE or Calorie Expenditure. Exercise in moderation, by the way, has also been shown to improve one's health and to slow the aging process. Some of the suggested mechanism are as follows:
- hormesis (1)
- combats free radical (2)
- insulin signalling (3)
- Activation of SIRT1 (4)
- and so on...
Looks a lot like the list provided for CR.
You could also restrict calories by combining the two. One of the above appears to be all about decreasing your options whilst the other appears to be about increasing your options. Exercise, most of the time, is fun and it's benefit go well beyond the physical. Exercise, especially for the elderly, is a great interactive social environment that keeps your mind working. I can't really see calorie restricting by diet being much fun at all. Continually calculating and weighing to make sure you're on top of things. It doesn't sound very social either. It's hard enough being a vegetarian at a social gathering let alone being on a calorie restricted nutrient dense diet. "Waiter, I ordered the CR option instead of the 50/50 beef/chicken split"
Anyhow, perhaps this has been discussed at length in another thread. I just thought that this would be a great discussion. I think I've been calorie restricting/expending for the last 10 years of my life without knowing because I'm very active and have a very clean diet. I've got some of the signs of what's been seen with calorie restriction in primates. I look younger than I really am and I'm a lot more energetic than my fellow monkeys....I mean 36 year olds.
Thoughts?
