Hi, long time lurker first time poster. I am trying to start taking some basic/simple supplements. Based on reading here, for now just a multi (1 cap of AOR Multi basic), and ~2500mg of fish oil.

I bought the Trader Joe's Omega-3 Fatty Acid "odorless" 1200mg fish oil 400mg EPA, 200mg DHA. Yesterday I took 2 caps after breakfast and 30 minutes later starting having fishy burps. I have on and off taken some fish oil before and never had these burps. Today I cut one open and it definitely smells like fish (i.e. not odorless). I am not sure if its rancid or not, but it is "fishy".

Is this normal or did I get a bad bottle? Can someone else who uses this brand cut one open and smell? I bought the Trader Joe's because of the EPA/DHA ratio, and low price, but I will get another brand if they have quality issues.

Thanks.

Well, I went ahead and did some experimenting to try to answer my own question...

I bought some Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, which seems to be a highly regarded brand, for comparison. Smell and taste-wise they are a lot milder than the TJs - not completly odorless, and they have some lemon flavoring to mask the flavors. So I am guessing that my TJs brand fish oil is not rancid, but maybe a bit old? At any rate, I think I am just going to stick with the Nordic Naturals since they are more thoroughly tested.

I am still interested in others experience with TJs brand, and I may pick up another bottle some time to see if it is different from the first one...

Fish burps means the oil has been oxidized and yes, basically a mild form of rancidity. If you're getting fish burps you should return the bottle of pills and get your money back. Nordic naturals is my favorite brand and even though it's significantly more expensive, you can over-all trust that you're getting a quality product.

I suggest using a spoon to measure your dose rather than drinking straight out of the bottle though. I've found that if I repeatedly touch my lips to the bottle by the near end it's mostly gelatinous and pretty disgusting. I'm guessing it's an effect of the enzymes in the saliva mixing and interacting with the FO.

But it sounds like you're using the capsules, so never-mind :)

I thought fish burps had to do with an enzyme some people have (or don't have)? And after a certain amount of time, the burps usually no longer occur?

As for TJ's fish oil, as a general practice, I avoid all store brand fish oils. Years ago, I used to buy a local health store brand (similar to Whole Foods), and one day broke open the gel. It was completely disgusting. Not just fishy, but rotten fish head fishy.

If your oil is fishy, but not sewer-quality, then I'd say it probably isn't rancid, but there certainly could be some oxidation going on. One option is to simply return it to Trader Joe's, tell them it's rotten, and get your money back.

And one weird thing I've noticed about Nordic naturals is, it too has a somewhat fish taste (masked by lemon). It's not bad or anything, but compared to low concentrate Carlson or Barlean's, it's certainly fishier. Now, that doesn't mean it's oxidized, as it could simply have to do with its processing. But if you are really fish adverse, there are some brands out there that have little to no fish flavor at all.

It's always debated whether or not the fish burps are a sign of oxidation or just the body getting used to the fish oil. I think we can figure it out based on 245's experience, though.

Did you get the same fish burps from Nordic Naturals that you had with the trader joe's brand?

I would say the TJ brand is on the edge between fishy and rotten fish head - it was surprisingly strong, which prompted me to make the post in the first place to see if anyone with the same product could see how their TJ pills smelled/tasted.

I agree that the Nordic Naturals is also somewhat fishy, but it not nearly as much as the TJ. But as I said before its not really 1:1 because of the lemon. I do respect that this brand has undergone much more scrutiny than the TJ "generic" as to its quality etc, and I am just going to stick with it (or Carlson, e.g.), and trust the test results. (And I think I will return the TJ pills, I had thought about that but wasn't sure, but now I will just tell them its rotten as you recommended.)

I don't know that I we can draw any general conclusions from my single experience. That said, the Nordic Naturals do not seem to give me fish burps (again: could be lemon-related). As above, basically I thought I could save some money going with the cheaper TJ brand, but my experience was not good, so I will pay a bit more and stick with something I believe I can trust a bit more.
