Rather than post in a dead thread [ http://www.longecity...mao-inhibition/ ] I did want to post about a case of suspected serotonin toxicity I likely experienced as a result of dosing MB while taking my regular dose of ADHD medication [ extended release methylphenidate aka Concerta ]
I recently took a drop or two of MB as a nootropic but forgot it's a Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)...
And, with the Concerta [ extended release methylphenidate] I'm taking ... not a good combination.
Serotonin toxicity can occur quickly [ within a day ] but also fortunately stopped in its tracks quickly if one realizes what is going on...
I've had these weird sensations of hollowness in my chest and sometimes extending to my arms. It physically felt like what 'anxiety attacks' were described to me as but I didn't feel anxious - just the physical symptoms. Part of me didn't want to consider the possibility my dose of Concerta was too high but nevertheless I took only half my dose this morning... but while driving, the same uneasy feeling comes up.
Then I start thinking -- what the Hell might it be? I can't be suddenly developing sensitivity ... can I? Then I remember... recently in the past week, I've been dosing a glass of water with one or two drops of Methylene Blue. [ usually I do it only once in a while but somehow I've managed to remember to take it almost each day ... ] And, voila! the very likely cause...
Usually I'm pretty open with my prescribing physician but I suspect if I share this incident with her tomorrow during my monthly ADHD prescription re-up appointment, she'll likely take me off the Concerta entirely. Earlier this year, after missing one appointment (and therefore one week of medications), she dropped my dose to 25% for weeks and titrating back up only after 90 days.
