Hi dear citizens of longe city,

I would like to discuss the possible application of Pterostilbene (or other stilbenes) for cognitive enhancement purposes. I stumbled over some such claims, though I only know of "preventive" applications of compounds like Resveratrol or Pterostilbene. All related comments & studies are very welcome.

Pterostilbene, a stlibenoid (like Resveratrol) found in blueberries and grapes shares some interesting properties with Resveratrol, while offering some addtional benefits and probable lacking some important benefits Resveratrol offers. (afaik that's still a matter of research)

Pterostilbene is advertised as having a high bioavailability of around 95% (compared to 20% for Resveratrol) and a half life of 105 minutes (compared to 14 minutes for Resveratrol)

Beside having possibly posetive effects on blood lipid levels, blood sugar levels - diabetes, blood pressure and even cancer fighting properties, Pterostilbene could help with cognitive decline.

There seems to be a linkage between Resveratrol (and Pterostilbene) and the development of cognitive impairments. Probably through reducing inflammation, blood lipids and sugar levels.
(in this context Sirtispharma announced that SRT3025 has shown "pharmacological activity in animal models of (...) neurodegenerative disease")

While this are all good traits the cognitive benefits seem to be more longterm and preventive.
That should not be a bad thing. Basically it's a prety good thing.

But some companies started to sell Pterostilbene as a Cognitive Enhancer.
From my understanding a cognitive enhancer is not an preventive intervention but an acute improvement of one's current mental skills. I do not want to hang myself with the term. I'm just unsure whether there actually are any studies supporting cognitive enhancing properties.

Chromadex (manufactorer of the raw ingriedient pTeroPure Pterostilbene) just speeks from "Cognitive Function" purposes which covers many terms, such as Cognitive Enhancement and preventing cognitive decline.

Interesting practical sidenote: Chromadex sets the optimum daily amount for "Cognitive Function" at 0.41 - 1.62 mg / kg (29.8 -117.8 mg for a 160 pound person)

Jarrow uses the expression "Neurologic Health" which tends more to Chromadex's indication "Cognitive Function"

Biotivia uses the expression "Cognitive Enhancement" as one possible health benefit for their new 250mg Pterostilbene only formula PteroActive.

Did anyone here notice any brain boosting, nootropic effect from Pterostilbene or comparable chemcals as Resveratrol?

I'll give it a try next time I order from BAC. I was interested in Pterostilbene a few years back when I was on a SIRT activation kick. There was no reasonable priced extracts at that time. Now that it is cheap, I'll give it a shot.

Hi Health Nutty,

Thanks for your reply!

Give it a try, and report back! I'm looking forward hearing your impression.

That's a good price, but BAC is

a) using a standarized extract with "only" 5% Ptero.
you probably can't point out which effect actually comes from Pterostilbene.

b) using the endangered (?) Kino tree, which is not very sustainable.

Advertisment: pTeroPure Pterostilbene by Chromadex is synthetic, nature identical Pterostilbene

I do not work for them :) Biotivialabs.com. or other bulk suppliers may also work with synthetic material.

I use the Jarrow pTeroPure Pterostilbene product and am very happy.

I experiance the same effect, I get from Resveratrol: slight mood lift, feeling of well being, feeling healthy, higher energy levels
The only difference is that I get the effects from 50mg Pterostilbene, compared with 500-1000mg Resveratrol.
Ok, the price-benefit ration may not be justified for now, but I'm sure the price will further drop.

The highest amount of Pterostilbene I took at once was just around 100mg. I will try the 250mg dose (as PteroActive) soon and report back.

I, too, am interested to know if there are any updates on this. I've been taking a blueberry extract supplement I found at walgreens that was free after rebate, "Heartblu", which they claim contains 50 mg pterostilbene per capsule (bottle of 60 caps). It says to take 1 in the morning, 1 at night...I've just been taking it once a day, every few days or so....each time I do feel pretty amazing/clean a few hours afterwards, but I can't necessarily attribute it to this product exclusively, as I also take lots of other supplements. I just took 2 capsules now for the first time (100 mg total pterostilbene). Anyone else try the upper doses of it care to report back?

What are the advantages of Pterostilbene?
More bioavailable - Improved Lipophilicity over Resveratrol which taken orally is just not that bioavailable.
Better bioactivity - It’s able to cross cell membranes better.
It’s more of a classic Nootropic - It has cognition and memory-enhancing effects.
Doesn’t blunt exercise gains - I don’t take Resveratrol because there’s evidence from two human clinical trials that Resveratrol hurts the gains that you might make in the gym, particularly in aerobic and cardiovascular exercise.
