One thing a lot of long-lived people have going for them, including Okinawans, is a clean environment. They live on an island that until recently was not very developed. They have a moderate climate so they could get a lot of fresh air. Being close to the ocean seems like it can aide in longevity. There are people with Okinawan ancestry where I live. Maybe I'm getting a skewed picture, but the Okinawan dishes I've seen weren't that healthy.

What do you mean by clean? As far as I can tell, in their history they have interacted substantially with the Chinese and Koreans.

Whoa.

I mean that they have lived in an environmentally clean place with ocean breezes.

hmm, so lack of infectious diseases help with longevity? I remember reading about a village in Ireland where crowding was so bad that everyone was infected by something. Everyone was so inflamed that life expectancy was 30-40.

P.S. I didn't mean to sound confrontational sorry. probably should have put a smiley face in there or something :)

Maybe you're talking about Scotland? The high number of people within a small area meant their immune system was more active than normal to protect people against infections. Unfortunately because of this they think that is one of the reasons for the high incidence of autoimmune diseases in Scotland. Could also be the lack of Vitamin D too. This was on a documentary a while back looking at centenarians and longevity in different parts of the world.

Sillewater, you are misunderstanding my posts. I wonder why that would be.

Page 114 is actually quite interesting. The authors state that 'Okinawan people... meditate to be healthy'. The meditation (as I understand) includes/incorporates stillness meditation, trans-like movements (sort of taiji/spiritual dance), and more vigorous exercises like karate. That is the diet is just one of components the Okinawan fenomenon. This is how I read the book anyway.
