Is there any data or opinions regarding the optimal level a person should maintain with autoimmune issues? I'm currently at 55 ng/ml, I have a positive ANA and 1 positive anti-body (anti-rnp) started 3 years ago. Luckily my only symptom is very mild raynaud's.

Is there any justification for going towards 80 or higher?

"Our data provide new evidence supporting a role for vitamin D in susceptibility to autoimmune disease through effects on a substantial number of associated genes, and highlight a number of important candidate regions and genetic variants to investigate further." [source]

You can safely go to 120ng/ml and see if you experience benefits.

You can also try the following combination:
  • 15g vitamin C: divide in 3-5 doses
  • 3g niacin: start with 3x250mg, and increase to 3x1000mg with additional 250mg every 3 days. You can go up to 6g.
  • 1500 IU mixed tocopherols/tocotrienols
  • use in combination with a B-complex multi

If you are going to use high dose vitamin d make sure you also use vitamin k2 to prevent soft tissue calcification and vitamin a to prevent toxicity . The Western A. Price Foundationn has good information on vitamin a and d interactions.

Otherwise I agree with Al-lksir recommendations.

mpe is right, if you supplement D3 you should also use K2 and vitamin A, for example in the following combination:
  • 15.000 IU - 30.000 IU D3: depending on what is needed to get your levels up, start with 15.000 IU and test after a few weeks
  • 50.000 IU - 100.000 IU Vitamin A: you should use the 9-cis-retinol form, for example from cod liver oil. Intake depending on your D3 intake
  • 15mg K2

But you don´t necessarily have to take supplements. A diet rich in liver or cod liver oil, carrots, meat, eggs and sauerkraut or natto will do the trick for those three. A, D and K are some of the few nutrients you don´t necessarily have to supplement in order to get adequate levels.
To boost your D3 additionally you should go out into the sun between 11am and 2pm, depending on your skin color. Test your tolerance by going out into direct sun for 15 minutes with only minimal clothing. Increase by 15 minutes every two days until you notice a slight coloring. Then decrease this level by 5-10 minutes.
You can increase your tolerance with a mix of natural carotinoids.

If you are taking statins you should choose the supplemental approach though.
