I thought this recent study looked very promising and in the American Journal of Cardiology, no less. Notice how low the dose was to achieve these impressive results; as the authors note, this is the longest human
consumption study to date and took approx. 3 years(!) to complete the whole thing.

One-Year Consumption of a Grape Nutraceutical Containing Resveratrol Improves the Inflammatory and Fibrinolytic Status of Patients in Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease.

Abstract

The search for complementary treatments in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a high-priority challenge. Grape and wine polyphenol resveratrol confers CV benefits, in part by exerting anti-inflammatory effects. However, the evidence in human long-term clinical trials has yet to be established. We aimed to investigate the effects of a dietary resveratrol-rich grape supplement on the inflammatory and fibrinolytic status of subjects at high risk of CVD and treated according to current guidelines for primary prevention of CVD. Seventy-five patients undergoing primary prevention of CVD participated in this triple-blinded, randomized, parallel, dose-response, placebo-controlled, 1-year follow-up trial. Patients, allocated in 3 groups, consumed placebo (maltodextrin), a resveratrol-rich grape supplement (resveratrol 8 mg), or a conventional grape supplement lacking resveratrol, for the first 6 months and a double dose for the next 6 months. In contrast to placebo and conventional grape supplement, the resveratrol-rich grape supplement significantly decreased high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (-26%, p = 0.03), tumor necrosis factor-α (-19.8%, p = 0.01), plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (-16.8%, p = 0.03), and interleukin-6/interleukin-10 ratio (-24%, p = 0.04) and increased anti-inflammatory interleukin-10 (19.8%, p = 0.00). Adiponectin (6.5%, p = 0.07) and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (-5.7%, p = 0.06) tended to increase and decrease, respectively. No adverse effects were observed in any patient. In conclusion, 1-year consumption of a resveratrol-rich grape supplement improved the inflammatory and fibrinolytic status in patients who were on statins for primary prevention of CVD and at high CVD risk (i.e., with diabetes or hypercholesterolemia plus ≥1 other CV risk factor). Our results show for the first time that a dietary intervention with grape resveratrol could complement the gold standard therapy in the primary prevention of CVD.

Wow, that is a low dose of resveratrol considering what they observed. The result is clouded a bit by the presence of other grape extracts in the mixture, but apparently those grape compounds, whatever they may have been, weren't doing much by themselves. This is a surprising result, I have to say. Oddly enough, I'm currently using a grape seed extract that contains 15mg resveratrol. I was only in it for the GSE, and had simply discounted the resveratrol. Maybe it's worth something after all...

Anyone have access to the data as to what grape extract they used? I'm curious if the non-resveratrol extract was exactly the same as the 8mg resv version... same polyphenol amounts, same type of extract, (minus resv, of course) etc.?

It seems weird that 8mg of resveratrol would do much of anything at all. It seems that if they wanted to do things accurately, they would have used an 8mg resveratrol dose not originating from grapes, at least in one subgroup.

Maybe by the time the scientist figure out that Resveratrol could make you live longer the small amount of users of the supplement may be 125 years old? :)
Today I ran 4.30 miles in one hour. I was pushing my heart rate to 153 BPM. The heart rate of a 30 year old.
Then I thought to myself, "self do not kill yourself"
But my heart rate needed a little over 2 minutes to return to rest state.
2 minutes to rest state of 109 to 111 BPM is ideal.
I needed a couple extra seconds to drop my Heart Rate.
GREAT STUDY!

"Patients undergoing primary prevention of CVD..." Does this mean the patients already had some form of - or signs of CVD?

Our results show for the first time that a dietary intervention with grape resveratrol could complement the gold standard therapy in the primary prevention of CVD.

As the Gold Standard Resveratrol could be used for the Prevention of many people exhibiting symptoms of CVD.

Take Resveratrol along with your Primary care workers regiment of medication and include exercise and diet.

Have a nice day!

So are you saying the patients were already undergoing standard treatments/therapies for CVD?

Will resveratrol ever stop incurring doubt? Finally, we have a decent HUMAN STUDY! Let the resveratrol supplementation commence.

So they were taking statins, at the very least.

I have tried it sparingly in the past, and I am this close to making it part of my supp regimen (which is very conservative). The studies have been somewhat positive. I just want to go through them with a fine tooth comb. A lot of studies cannot be reproduced.

I understand. And I get that first hand experience isn't always touted as the premise from which to proceed but whenever I take a high quality, low emodin Resveratrol supplement I feel excellent (comparatively speaking). So I try to let that be somewhat of an indicator, and just let the studies sort of bookend it.

What am I saying?
If one supplements with Resveratrol with or without CVD you have a better chance of living longer.
But I also must add that exercise and diet are extremely important for longevity.
Additionally, A regiment of medication for conditions diagnosed by your family MD is very important.
Life goes on. :-D
