This being my first post ever on this forum ill introduce myself.

Im from Mississippi. Im 26. I live a life of virtual retirement. I work a part time job that I get off at two, im a carpenter of some skill,
and a car dealer on the side. I built my own house and keep myself in a decent car. Now to the part about this post......

I was raised Penecostal. I mean extremely Pentecostal( no tv, wash each others feet and pray pentecostal)
This did not work out very well at all since I was always a bright kid in everything but grammar. I love to read and they were all sure my books would send me to hell. I have been accused of being possessed by the devil and my younger brother told me several times that i was destined to hell. Playing dungeon and dragons deffinately did not help the situation......

Anyway my great aunt macy used to preach to me alot about the endtime and her particular church preached that 2000 was not the endtime but that it was near that you just had to figure in Jesus lifespan into the equation so her theory was 2000 + b= endtime
b being however long jesus lived.

I totally hate penecostal churches. they are evil. every preacher I've ever met was a fake. My cousin David runs one of the largest penecostal churches here and he is a tyrant. the women must dress in longsleeves and long skirts no makeup. men must wear longsleeve shirts always. the thing that gets me is David was a pot-smoking trailer park junkie known for his theiving skills until my uncle fell ill. Now david is a man of god in a huge new brick house with atleats 4 new trucks and he just aquired a lake. These people are dirt poor but he gets his 10% of their paychecks.(He also prophesied he saw a big ball of fire come down on my house to the whole church can you imagine the phone calls?)

Well in closing to most of you this fanaticsm is in far away in places like iraq. For me its everytime I walk out the door.

lancelot7100,

You may want to make an introductory post in the actual "Introduce Yourself" forum.

Welcome to a little island of sanity.. (most of the time) You definitely are the apple that fell far from the tree.

Would you say that religion and life-extension are mutually exclusive? Do you think that religions will insist that people have to die or do you think that there might be some wiggle room where they can say that longer lives mean they are closer to god, or are allowed to stay on the earth to suffer/do good works longer?

Exclusive? No. Im sure somre religions will embrace it as gods will. That is the thing about christianity in particular, The bible is so open to interpretation that you can pull a rabbit out of your hat at anytime by a twist of interpretation.

You have to realize that alot of people are scared of dying that is the main premise for religion to save ones essence after death. Life extension will threaten this and Im sure alot of church higherups especially in the penetecostal/evangelical
side will call it an act of Satan and that having electronics or new body parts is the mark of the beast and that this is the endtime. there will be talk of the serial numbers on the new parts or in microchips in an injection.
Since the threat of death is what brings people to religion (That or the social im better than you aspect) to actually tell someone to live forever is a sin religious leaders will be threateneing their own power over their followers. I know that people will still die that piano will still fall out a window one day and crush us, but with death not in our thoughts every waking day. I see a deffinate antiquation of religions in general. It is a no win situation for religions Damned if you do damned if you dont kinda thing .

lancelot1700, I do not believe this dialog should be here in this topic, I'd ask Kevin to remove this to the Introduction session were you can freely continue this, and you are happily welcome.
