Weed, Schitzophrenia or aliens.

It's a good point about weed. The times I've caught glimpses of something bigger (like supernatural presence) I've been pretty baked. It all seemed quite real at the time, ha. In fact "presence" seemed so palpable even down in my bones that to doubt it felt absurd and extraordinary. But sadly I think it's delusional. Wake up again and poof "presence" is gone again. Coy god. God of shyness. Weed and shrooms certainly provide a tantalizing loosening of boundaries and possibilities for seekers, however.

It's very possible, IMO, that hallucinogenic roots, berries and mushrooms, going back 10's of 1000's of years ago, may have played a significant role in the invention of gods.

Yeah the whole story about the "burning bush" and then hallucinations of god talking to you in the bible really drives my point across.

Intermittently, under yet unclear conditions, the plant excretes such a vast amount of volatiles that lighting a match near the flowers and seedpods causes the plant to be enveloped by flame. This flame quickly extinguishes without injury to the plant.

Colin Humphreys replies that "the book of Exodus suggests a long-lasting fire that Moses went to investigate, not a fire that flares up and then rapidly goes out."[25]
A 2012 paper in the Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences suggested that psychiatric conditions associated with psychotic spectrum symptoms may be possible explanations for revelatory driven experiences and activities such as those of Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Paul the Apostle.[26]

Possibly toxic or hazardous fumes from a poisonous plant with a large eucalypt or oil content. Ie, a poisonous olive tree.
