I agree with maxwatt's suggestions to choose a brand that advertises a 98 or 99 per cent purity
level. Some suppliers provide a current certificate of analysis from an independent lab, while
others refuse to provide this.
An issue I encountered is that Japanese knotweed, a widely used botanical source for resveratrol,
also contains emodin, a stimulant laxative. Emodin and other substances can be removed from the
product through a pharmaceutical purification process.
There is nothing inherently wrong with emodin -- some studies show benefits -- but you should be
the one to decide whether you want to take it, and how much. Chronic use of anthraquinone
laxatives like emodin may cause problems, so at a minimum you ought to know how much
you are taking,
Stick with resveratrol of known purity with a published, independent analysis.
