...once I tried L-theanine as I had heard such good things about it helping anxiety and have always loved drinking tea which it is a part of.
So I bought a bottle of it and within a few days I found it making me very depressed even after I lowered the dose. I wasn't on any other meds or supplements at the time.
I can't understand why all these supplements make me feel worse...what could be wrong with a person that has such a bad response to so called 'natural' cures?
All of the following aggravate my anxiety/depression:
Sam-E (possibly I'm over-methlyated)
L-methylfolate (same as above)
Gingko
Fish oil
N-Acetylcysteine
Milk thistle
Inositol
Magnesium glycinate/taurate
St. Johns Wort
the list goes on and on....

Most other anti-depressants interact negatively with St. Johns wart other than that I'm not sure.

Because these aren't full cures if you have just one of theses it is like throwing a pebble to break down a brick wall. No wonder you feel like shit. Theanine calms people by affecting gaba and dopamine but it is not a replacement for quality medical treatment.

to put things in perspect I take
2000mg of l theanine
3000mg of N-Acetylcysteine
4000mg of inositol
600mg of ginko
300mg of 5-htp
a SNRI
adderall
strattera
lithium
and 800-1600mg of SAM e
with 12 THOUSAND mgs of fish oil.

rather than cures these are more of tools that are shown as definite symptom improvers.

(Note: don't make any rash changes without a doctor you could get a serious condition called seritonin syndrome I added all those slowly over MONTHS!)

There is hope I made a full remission with my anxiety and depression after a suicide attempt with medical and supplement and theraputic interventions

Also try yoga, sleeping well, a quality diet, meditation. Cognitive behavioral thearpy, and DBT.

I have recently started "mega" dosing on theanine since its cheap and might help with my insomnia. I've been taking about 4 to 6 gm a day. It is relaxing but I've noticed that lately I often have no energy and feel a little down and/or unmotivated. I'm not sure its the theanine. I may need to take something stimulating in the morning but it would have to wear off quick because I need to sleep at night. I take a variety of vitamins and supps but have not noticed this until recently when I started the theanine or about a week after I started.

Kinds, don't try this at home.

To put things into perspective for people not that familar with those medications - those are contraindicated, meaning a combination of them can result in very dangerous interactions with death as a likely result. (Serotonin Syndrome through excess serotonin or cardiovascular events through excess noradrenaline for example, not to mention problems with increased bleeding which, together with high blood pressure from noradrenaline could be a bad combination. And those are only the problems I see right away, I am sure there are more...)
