I have an ongoing problem with neck pain from extremely tight muscles. At some fundamental level it is probably a stress and anxiety issue, but sometimes it seems to have an existence of its own. Are there any supplements/herbs etc. that have a direct myorelaxant effect and are reasonably safe and effective. Also, as a former benzo user, I would like to avoid if possible known GABA agonists although that may be asking too much.

I lost all back pain once with memantine + tianeptin. I actually went outside to jog - it felt great - and not much euphoria or anything like that, I was relaxed and cracking jokes. But I lost it after I drank alcohol and couldn't get it back. I get some of the same feeling (50-60%) with memantine alone - repeatable, but I can't get to where that combo got me once.

So, from that experience I kinda concluded that back pain = mental stress.

Yes to the magnesium. Also, glutamine can prevent lactic acid build-up in your muscles and is a GABA precursor.

You may also want to try some topical Arnica, which increases circulation and relieves stiffness.

Also, I tend to have neck pain and I swear by doing yoga/stretching and sleeping with a contour pillow that gives adequate neck support.

I got lower back pain when my weight crept up; the pain mostly disappeared when I got thin(ish) again.

Also, the lower back pain comes back if I consume coffee. One cup/day is enough to bring it back... Which is sad, because I like coffee.
