If you have, like me, become obsessed with reducing inflammation you probably already have come across Andrew Weil and his
anti-Inflammatory diet. I think Dr. Weil is one of the foremost experts on inflammation with regard to diet and integrative medicine. Is makes no sense to take anti-inflammatory supplements if you keep eating a pro-inflammatory diet.
Turmeric/curcumin (strong inhibitor of COX-2) works synergistically with St. John's wort/hyperforin (
strong inhibitor of COX-1 and 5-LO) to reduce inflammation. I have good experiences with taking both in combination.
I can say that I have been quite successful so far in controlling my own inflammation. In the past I had to deal with a lot of conditions all related in some way to unchecked inflammation: asthma, atopic eczema, rheumatism, depression. They are all gone now, thanks to my diet and some supplements (I gave a list of them
here).
Allthough it is impossible to tell which part of my diet and supplement regime contributes to which extend to that outcome, from my experiences taking pre- and probiotics in the form of a homemade yogurt has made a significant difference, as well as optimizing my vitamin D status. A high intake of fiber, dietary and supplemental polyphenols and omega 3 fatty acids (from both ALA and fish oil) probably all play their part too.
