Anti-inflammatory Benchmarks for Supplements?

I have become obsessed with reducing inflammation as my body has shown signs of not being able to control it. From what I read it is a predictor for pretty much every major disease.

I am aware of the many supplements that reduce inflammation. Is there a study or document that compares their effectiveness 1vs1? If I had to guess I would say Turmeric is the most potent single compound.but I was just wondering if this has been quantified.

The list is endless but some of the usual suspects are:
  • Fish Oil
  • Turmeric
  • Kelp
  • Nettle
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Magnesium
  • etc...

I would argue that DHA and aspirin is probably the most potent combination to synergistically reduce inflammation in the body followed by curcumin. See this study http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/23398903 on DHA and aspirin combo.

If you have, like me, become obsessed with reducing inflammation you probably already have come across Andrew Weil and his anti-Inflammatory diet. I think Dr. Weil is one of the foremost experts on inflammation with regard to diet and integrative medicine. Is makes no sense to take anti-inflammatory supplements if you keep eating a pro-inflammatory diet.

Turmeric/curcumin (strong inhibitor of COX-2) works synergistically with St. John's wort/hyperforin (strong inhibitor of COX-1 and 5-LO) to reduce inflammation. I have good experiences with taking both in combination.

I can say that I have been quite successful so far in controlling my own inflammation. In the past I had to deal with a lot of conditions all related in some way to unchecked inflammation: asthma, atopic eczema, rheumatism, depression. They are all gone now, thanks to my diet and some supplements (I gave a list of them here).

Allthough it is impossible to tell which part of my diet and supplement regime contributes to which extend to that outcome, from my experiences taking pre- and probiotics in the form of a homemade yogurt has made a significant difference, as well as optimizing my vitamin D status. A high intake of fiber, dietary and supplemental polyphenols and omega 3 fatty acids (from both ALA and fish oil) probably all play their part too.

I agree that lifestyle/diet are the most important factors. Just wanted to know how supplements stack up against each other for that extra boost, so as not to waste money, time, effort etc..

Here's another one that I was not aware of: BORON.

According to Dr. Richard A. Kunin MD.
  • "Now there is evidence that boron is probably essential for humans. Beyond that, some boron compounds have almost miraculous power against inflammation, vascular disease, and cancer."
  • "The boranes were found to be dual inhibitors of both cyclo-oxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes. By blocking cyclo-oxygenase, the gateway enzyme to prostaglandins and thromboxanes, as well as lipoxygenase, gateway to the pro-inflammatory leukotrienes, the boranes have the more profound anti-inflammatory effect than any other single compound that I know."

I don't think there is any study that compares the effectiveness of the various anti inflammatory supplements available.
I had my CRP first measured over. Five years ago, it was 1.3 if I recall correctly.
I began supplementing heavily back then.
My latest CRP is .3. Notice to all those that say supplementing is useless.
I attribute the change to the following , though other supplements could contribute slightly as does a generally good diet
Fish oil 2000 mg
Curcumin BC-95. 500 mg twice a day
MSM. 1000mg
Magnesium 500 mg
Buffered ascorbate C 2000 mg

Thanks for posting that. It was new to me, but I was able to find plenty of studies in Google Scholar supporting the significant value of boron/boric acid against cancer, inflammation and toxins.

Don't know about boranes, though. An extremely brief web search suggests that they are exotic pharmaceutical products.

they all have their own benefits.  but it definitely pays to choose wisely, because you start adding up too many random anti-inflammatories and the body will actually respond by trying to upregulate inflammatory factors, some of them not affected by supplements and being boosted high above baseline.

 

and i realize it's the supplement section, but turmeric, ginger, and just a sensible source of fats (grass fed meats and yogurts, sunflower/olive over canola and soybean oil, and preferably not much fish oil, just lots of flaxseed and the occasional salmon steak or tin of sardines).  certain things though technically slightly inflammatory are still indispensable when it comes to overall health and vigor, blueberries are probably the best example with an IF rating of -20 or something like that.  so just follow that and you won't be overdoing things, you won't be selling yourself short either.  you'll have bounds of energy gushing out of every pore, for work, yoga, biking, going out, you name it you'll have it

That product is a ripoff, because it contains 1200 mg of plain Turmeric powder and only 100 mg of 95% Curcumin extract + 10 mg bioperine.
