I'm quite unique in that I have abnormally high levels of Cystathionine & Cysteine, with concurrent high levels of Formiminoglutamic acid. This was kinda confirmed after taking NAC made me feel 10x worse.

However, for people with high Cystathionine-Beta Synthase, although there are a few supplements to reduce Ammonia (Arginine/Ornithine, Carnitine) there appears to be little information on how to fix the high cysteine levels, which can actually contribute to cancer and neurological abnormalities.

However, I found 1 study that says that a special form of B12, Hydroxocobalamin, reduces Cysteine:

Having low Tetrahydrofolate as well as high Cysteine can be a bitch, because supplementing with methyl-donors is just going to go down the drain. So, taking Hydroxocobalamin along with 5-MTHF may be a good way to go.

This is quite interesting to me as I have been a proponent of regular NAC supplementation. The only downside that I've found is concerns over pulmonary arterial hypertension. A rodent study with a human-equivalent dose of 18G/day showed PAH. There was also a human study showing a hypoxic response as well. Beyond that NAC is a remarkable supplement. It:

- Boosts glutathione production
- Slashes homocysteine
- Seems to confer excellent flu protection
- and a host of other benefits.

How did you find out that you have high levels of cysteine? And do you have any references for these "cancer and neurological abnormalities" that you refer to?

I'm also quite interested in your subjective "10x worse" feelings. What are they? I've been trying to debug some general lousiness (stiff muscles/ joints, episodic feelings of exhaustion, amongst other symptoms) in my own self. I've been taking NAC regularly for about a year at ~600mg/day. I categorically can not attribute these negative feelings to NAC specifically (or any other supplement I take) but I wonder if perhaps I'm oversupplied.

Agwoodliffe - I'm curious how you established you have high levels of Cystathionine & Cysteine? What kind of test can you take?

Got tested from Genova Diagnostics, NUTREval.

The results can be so vast, you will need a specialist to help make sense of them.

And I'm sure NAC can be great for many people. But it's true when they say one man's food is another man's poison.

I found some seemingly-contradictory CBS inhibition strategies: phaclofen (GABA-B antagonist) and benzodiazepines.

Does OH-B12 + vitamin C work orally? Those mice were injected with a human equivalent of ~800 mg OH-B12, which is an impractical oral dose.
