What you guys need to know about lutein su...

OneScrewLoose's Photo OneScrewLoose 08 May 2015

An excerpt I had from a chat at the guys at customcapsule.com back in 2012:

I have heard that Lutein powder is only 5% actual Lutein. Is this true for the Lutein you guys use as well. Should I put 20 times the amount of the dose it says to get the dosage I actually want.

Hello,

You are correct, the lutein powder is only 5%.  On our site, we give a typical dose as 6mg-20mg, but I have seen it slightly different elsewhere.  So yes, you would need to up the amount of powder times 20 to achieve your desired yield.  I can't tell you how much you should take in, but I will paste below a typical dosing excerpt.

LUTEIN Dosing
The following doses have been studied in scientific research:

BY MOUTH
 :
  • For reducing the risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD): 6 mg of lutein per day, either through diet or using supplements. People consuming 6.9 to 11.7 mg of lutein per day through diet had the lowest risk of developing AMD and cataracts.
  • For reducing symptoms of AMD: 10 mg per day of lutein supplements.
There is 44 mg of lutein per cup of cooked kale, 26 mg/cup of cooked spinach, and 3 mg/cup of broccoli.

That's a BIG. FUCKING. DEAL. And if companies have been doing this for a long time, is there anything we can do about it?

Make sure to take a standardized supplement with the amount of actual lutein listed, also it's fat soluble, so take it with food

Notice that ' 5%'. This is standard in all lutein used in supplements. So your 10mg dose? It's really 500mcg.

My 1/8tsp lutein powder equals 412mg.....5% of that equals 20mg lutein.

Don't believe me? Fair enough. Just ask Swanson for Lutein CoA.

Perhaps you could read for yourself rather than mislead people.  And this is the reason for purchasing standardized supplements sold on the basis of ingredient content rather than simply the amount of raw material...as in bulk purchase.
