How to choose fish oil?

mayling's Photo mayling 03 Jun 2015

Hi,

After some research, I concluded that I want to include fish oil into my supplement routine!

Then came the different factors that seems to overwhelm me..

There are talks about DHA/EPA ratio, heavy metal contamination, mercury bioaccumulation, dosages, TG v rTG v EE, Krill v Fish v Salmon v Algae, oxidation, peroxides, antioxidant content etc..

I used to take NOW DHA-500 but despite my immediate refrigeration (and freezer compartment refrigeration), the fish oil seems to smell funny after a week or two.

Obviously, since I'll be taking it for a really really long time, I'd choose safety and purity over pricing.

So, how do I choose them?

I was advised to choose either Nordic Naturals or Omegavia, and between those two, I eventually chose Omegavia because:

From http://www.omegavia....via-difference/

1. There are more Omega-3 per softgel than even Lovaza.

Most importantly:

From http://www.omegavia....ity-and-safety/

2. IFOS five-star rating

3. Made completely in the USA, facility certified by USP, NSF, HACCP, cGMP, WHO, EUS, CRN, etc..

4. Extraction using low-temperature CO2 extraction and chromatography (one of four companies using this..)

5. Tested for radiation

So, naturally, I'd go for Omegavia, but it really does seem too good to be true..

Anyone can find something wrong with thi product :P or have better alternatives before I start buying them for my family (huge investment)?

Thanks!

Buy it and tested on a privat laboratorie, that's the best way to find what you eat :)

Fish oil is the only supplement I buy in large chain stores like Trader Joe's and Costco. The reason is that the higher turnover rate guarantees freshness. This is what I get:

410mg of EPA and 270mg of DHA per capsule. Enteric coated. Couldn't ask for more for that price.
