Finding lithium orotate in South Africa is almost impossible. No pharmacy keeps it, and if you can find it at an online shop, it is almost always out of stock. I waited 4 months for delivery when I tried ordering last time.

So, next option is to manufacture it myself. I do have access to a laboratory supply store that can get me both purified Lithium metal and orotic acid. It seems that orotic acid will readily react with lithum hydroxide. http://onlinelibrary...231207/abstract . Adding lithium metal to water is an easy way to get the Lithium hydroxide.

Most important step is to calculate the amount of reactants needed. Do anyone see anything I'm missing? I love chemistry, but I have no formal training.

I have the following molar weights.
Orotic acid - 156.10
Hydrogen 1.01
Lithium 6.94
Lithium orotate 162.03

Ignoring the 0H ion I have:
Li (6.94) + C5H4N2O4 (156.10) = C5H3LiN2O4 (162.03) + H (1.01)
Giving me a total molar weight of 163.04.

But I'm not using orotic acid, I'm using orotic acid monohydrate. Add the water.
163.04 + 18.02 = 181.06

So the relation is
181.06 / 6.94 = 26.09 times
So for every 1g of lithium, I need 25.09g of orotic acid monohydrate.

To double check
1000 (mg Li) / 6.94 (Li) * 174.16 (orotic acid.H20) = 25095 (mg orotic acid.H2O)

Trace amounts of orotic acid does not seem to be a problem, so adding 5mg or 10mg extra to make sure all the lithium reacts may be a good idea. They even thought it a vitamin at a stage.

While I guess I can order it from an international site, this will be an interesting little side project. Even 1g worth of lithium will last me almost 3 years at 1mg a day
