I did some searches and found nothing here. Maybe I did something wrong (I'm new here). I admit I didn't search for all its names.

Other Names: Ademetionine, Adenosylmethionine, Adénosylméthionine, S-Adenosyl Methionine, S-Adénosyl Méthionine, S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine, S-Adénosyl-L-Méthionine, S-Adenosylmethionine, S-Adénosylméthionine, S-Adenosylmethionine Butanedisulfonate, S-Adenosylmethionine Tosylate, S-Adenosylmethionine Tosylate Disulfate, SAM, SAM-e, Sammy.

My experience is very positive. It's the best mood improving substance I ever tried that keeps working after a few weeks. I tried a lot of usual things in the last 1-2 years when i decided enough is enough and I needed to fix the low energy and depression state I got myself in. Some thing didn't work, some worked slightly or only for a short time. SAMe is so good, I discontinued most of the other supplements, except for vitamins, minerals, and NAC. The only problem I noticed, I can't take it with Methyl-B9 all the time. After a few days together I become mildly jittery and there is some minimal hand parasthesias and face flashing. Adding more B12 (cyan or hydroxy) doesn't help, but stopping Methyl-B9 helps. Hypermethylation?

I'm on a third vendor now. Currently I'm taking low cost ebay capsules (400mg SAMe derived from 800mg SAMe toyslate di-sulfate). I started with 200mg from Natrol, then moved to 400mg from Nature Made. They were expensive. I was told SAMe has to be individually wrapped and enterically coated to be bioavailable. The weird thing is the ebay capsules are neither and work the best. They are fortified with 5mg B1, 5mg B2, and 8ug B12. Not sure why and whether it matters (I'm taking B vitamins already).

Anyone else has good or bad experience with SAMe? Some of the online reviews are scary: http://www.depressio...es/000027.shtml

On the other hand, Amazon reviews tend to be positive and that encouraged me to try it.

My 70 year old relative takes it. He claims it lifts his mood, gives him energy and makes his urine clear. He also claimed that the first time he took it he had visual closed eye pseudohallucinations and a strong sudden libido, and it may help with his osteoarthritis.

He has given himself serotonin syndrome from mixing it with pregnenolone.

For me it gives all the same terrible effects that 5htp or tryptophan does, namely drowsiness and so on.

It's terribly expensive and you need to store it right, and you only get 50% of what you ingest due to the molecule being unstable.

Oh and during one of my "SAM-e cycles" which lasted a week, every morning I woke up I was insanely nauseous and dizzy, couldn't even stand on my feet, which definitely was something serotonin syndrome related. Be careful.

If you have the money I'd say go for it, use it. Otherwise don't bother.

LOL at this review:

"Sam-e helps my mood immensely [...]. The problem is that is shuts my stomach down, I think I have so much stagnant energy around the diaphragm and solar plexus, that the Sam-e starts to move the Qi and it's too much for me at this time."

Thanks for responding.

In the meantime I learned how to search the forum (the google option works the best) and found some other threads on SAMe.

In my case, I don't respond to 5HTP at all, have only mild response to tryptophan, but much better response to tyrosine and/or inosytol. SAM response is the best, and I actually stopped taking it since 400mg seems too much. Felt like buzzy feeling and face flush. The other things you said about it being expensive, unstable, etc, doesn't seem to be legit.

It's amazing how everyone is different in regard to those supplements.

I have used various brands of SAMe, off and on, for a number of years.

IMO there is a big difference between "generic," or store brands, and I have had good luck with Nature Made SAMe.  I have no affiliation in any way with the brand.

Ultimately, what I find it most useful for is to potentiate Modafinil, which I take for sleep apnea, if I have to take it more than two days in a row.

At higher doses, it is also very effective at helping joint pain caused by overtraining, or ramping up exercise programs.  Far more effective, IMO, than glucosamine/chondroitin blends-- though to be fair, those blends tend to be far less expensive that SAMe.

I do find that high doses (double recommended dose) can cause increased anxiety (again, for me).  Other side effects worth note include some stomach discomfort, nausea, and even diarrhea.

I do notice a slight boost in mood and energy levels, almost immediately;  but, ultimately I do not use in on a regular basis, primarily because of it's cost.

Now, I tend to take it only when I see a 2 for 1 sale on a high quality brand.
