It may have ended up being the case that we didn’t have any viable research strategies that could move us with any significant distance toward indefinite life extension until far later in the movement. We may have been promoting, organizing, rallying, holding the countless important key discussions, knocking on the real and proverbial doors, building the forums and websites, putting out ads, doing the interviews, the conferences, talking to the media and politicians, and have not had any good viable research strategies yet.

As luck would have it though, some of the brains of us indefinite life extensionists, around a dozen or so people, like the geronologist Michael West, evolutionary biologist Michael Rose, and the bio-engineering gerontologist Aubrey de Grey, to name a few, were acute enough to be able to absorb, sort through and spot out all the directly relevant science related to the defeat of aging, and develop strategies to defeat it. This is a huge step forward. Now we are able to work on science that can make this happen as we bring this movement to the world. This is no small blessing that providence has bestowed upon this great grandfather of all movements. Evolutionary biology, bio-engineering and many other strategies continue to gain ground.

One main strategy is called SENS, Strategies for Engineering Negligible Senescence, or in other words, strategies for ending aging. SENS outlines detailed strategies for cleaning out all of the 7 (known) forms of damage that cause our cells to age us to death. They also take the credit for pointing out why, given all that we know at the present time, we can safely say that it is likely just these 7. No additional factors beyond these 7 have been pointed out by the whole of the scientific community since 1984.

Remember now that research that is like these 7 strategies has already had successes in the labs, as we explained with the example of lysosomes, and there are many other examples. Again now, and this is important, this means that its not even a matter of can we do it?: it’s a matter of when will we do it? We not only know that we have to give it everything we have to try to escape this blizzard, we already know now that others have made these same kinds of escapes. To quote Dr. de Grey, “We can no longer pretend that we know so little about how to cure aging that the timing of this advance will be determined overwhelmingly by future serendipitous discoveries: we are in the home straight already.”

SENS has mobilized its own academic initiative to start opening the gate ways to students. The project has already been infused with its first multimillion dollar donations from people like the co founder of PayPal and Facebook, Peter Theil. It has been in the labs, its strategies busy being worked on. It has received media attention from around the world, including but not limited to appearances on 60 Minutes, Barbara Walters Special, CNN, BBC, The History Channel, and a host of others. It has held multiple international conferences with leading, renowned researchers from around the world. It has backing from countless people, many of whose names you are likely to know. Most importantly to the enquiring mind, it has produced a book explaining it all in plain terms for the world to understand, called Ending Aging.

Notable books on other strategies include The Immortal Cell, The Future of Aging and The Long Tomorrow: How Advances in Evolutionary Biology Can Help Us Postpone Aging. Note this down and order them as soon as you get the chance. Order as many copies as you can afford and give them out to friends, families, and all the libraries, grade schools, universities, old folks homes and other places that you can.

So some strategies are already underway, with many more to develop. It’s a really great start for a movement as important as this to already be ahead of schedule.

It has gotten a lot of total coverage. I can be easy to miss if you dont look for it sometimes, but it gets steady amounts of small but growing coverage, and that all adds up big time. It continues to lead to slightly bigger and bigger coverage.

It is a good key talking point when working to tell people about the cause. People are more easily swayed when you can reference a source they see as an authority of any kind. It makes it feel more popular and safe to accept for them. People are more likely to believe what they see in writing, print, interview, recorded dialogue. They also generally need to hear about new concepts from 3 or more sources that they view as at least partially credible before they begin believing a thing. So tossing them a few of those media references can usually help you to make a lot of ground with them in informing them about the cause.
