They may not prevent cancer, but could they still might be helpful for preventing brain damage?

I think it's going to depend on the antioxidant. Some are a lot more potent than others.

Antioxidants help in many age-related neurodegeneration processes (as well as in brain damage due to causes other than age). See for example

I have found that if you take melatonin it helps you to more quickly recover from smoking harmful effects. So, that is tru that antioxidants slow down ageing.
