I'm disappointed this idea never crossed my mind. MetP Pharma AG has developed a patented dopamine nasal gel and delivery system but could a cheap generic solution achieve acceptable results?

Eh, I don't think it's worth it. The problem with L-Dopa is that neurons are quickly desensitized to dopamine, and a common dose seems to be about 100mg, which seems like it would translate to a large volume of substance to be absorbed intranasally. Considering there's a likely cascade effect from the dopamine, which would cause an epinephrine response ultimately leading to temporary sinus drainage, the whole thing sounds like a bad time.

Dopamine doesnt cross the BBB?
Most neurotransmitters present in the blood do not enter the brain because of their low lipid solubility and lack of specific transport carriers in the luminal membrane of the capillary endothelial cell. This is illustrated for dopamine in Figure 32-2. In contrast, l-DOPA, the precursor for dopamine, has affinity for the large neutral amino acid-transport system and more easily enters the brain from the blood than would be predicted by its lipid solubility (Figs. 32-1 and 32-2). This is why patients with Parkinson's disease are treated with l-DOPA rather than with dopamine

I would imagine the same thing would happen as with exogeneous testosterone. The body, or in this case the brain, senses there is an abundance of dopamine and decreases its own production. Most likely tyrosine hydroxylase expression would decrease. Also, this method would probably create euphoria because of the rapid increase in dopamine in the brain. It would probably be regulated tightly and made illegal to sell without a prescription.
