I found this supplement while looking for different brands of MCT oil (particularly C8 MCT oil) in glass bottles:

http://prototypenutr...m/ur-spray.html

It's a topical Arginine Ursolic Acetate which scoots around the low bioavailability of ursolic acid. In reading online, I'm unable to determine if this is a safe supplement wrt cardiovascular / systemic health or something to be avoided. I suppose it could also be snake oil.

Here's what I was able to dig up.

Thoughts?

Here's some newer papers on UA and atherosclerosis. Just glancing at titles, it looks like the newer ones are pointing to it being safe-ish, but I've not read the papers.

https://www.ncbi.nlm...les/PMC3379974/ "Ursolic Acid Increases Skeletal Muscle and Brown Fat and Decreases Diet-Induced Obesity, Glucose Intolerance and Fatty Liver Disease"

Standardized Holy Basil extract contains 2% wt/wt of ursolic acid. The extraction uses ethanol.

http://www.mdpi.com/...7/12/8/5319/pdf (Water extraction, eg Tulsi tea, seems useless for ursolic acid.)

In this study, rosemary extracts had between 0% and 40% ursolic acid, depending on the rosemary collection area.

https://www.ncbi.nlm...les/PMC4264185/

You can buy rosemary extract standardized to 25% wt/wt of ursolic acid. Look under "ursolic acid supplements" The best deal I found on Amazon is 180 capsules at 75mg ea for $19.99. The recommended dose is 300 mg/day.

The magnitude of effects seems quite modest. Reviewers on Amazon mostly just noticed a little weight loss.

In mice: UA significantly increased SIRT1 (∼3.5±0.3 folds) and SIRT-6 (∼1.5±0.2 folds) proteins overexpression (P<0.001). In addition, our results showed that UA enhanced α-Klotho (∼3.3±0.3) and PGC-1β (∼2.6±0.2 folds) proteins levels (P<0. 01)

https://www.ncbi.nlm...pubmed/27470332

Another paper - a very recent one:

UA enhanced SIRT1 (~ 5 ± 0.2 folds) and SIRT6 (~ 8 ± 0.5 folds) proteins levels in hepatic, p<0.001. In addition, the data showed that UA increased PGC-1β (~ 7 ± 0.4 folds) protein overexpression, p<0.001. Moreover, we showed that UA up-regulated Klotho (~ 3.5 ± 0.2 folds) protein in order to improve hepatic performance

I'm looking into taking UA again, or I might just grow a bunch of rosemary.

What are your thoughts on topical complexed UA? From what I understand, it's not very bioavailable in humans. Eg., http://prototypenutr...m/ur-spray.html

Too bad it doesn't work in humans. Lots of people on bodybuilding forums have tried it to no avail. It apparently only works in mice.
