Intro. General health or longevity?

Posted by Brainbox , 19 January 2009 · 831 views

Some of the radical efforts, e.g. using supplements to reach towards immortality, are not mine. I'm using supplements, but tune it towards health benefits in stead of longevity alone, although this difference might not be obvious at first sight. I'm doing about 80% CR. After calculating my daily caloric intake, I did discover that I have unknowingly been doing this for about all my life. Nowadays, I tune towards eating more healthy foods while maintaining my apparently natural calorie intake which can be considered CR if general intake is used as norm. In general, early adapting rather radical supplementation discoveries are considered to risky by me. There seems to be a trade-off (or balance) between trying to maintain healthy normal cell division and promotion of cancer. Another trade-off is manipulation of the immune system and possible / probable negative side effects like auto-immunity. I know I do focus for a great deal on the risks in stead of possible benefits, but that's just my nature. Don't bother to try to change that. :)

I did sigh-up with a genome sequencing service. I would like to know as much as possible about my constitution. This early-adopting activity is a bit questionable, although the quality of the sequencing itself seems to be quite decent, the interpretation of a genome is still in its infancy. But I think it's a lot of fun even if "bad genes" would be discovered. Be prepared pragmatically.

Furthermore, I hope SENS and other initiatives will be starting to produce tangible results in the near future.

If immortality would become possible in the near future, implications on society would be a bit de-stabilising since "society" is not prepared.

So, I'm somewhat sceptical, but I like the drive that's behind this movement and the spin-off it has for my general health goals, so I try to support it (in practice this forum) as much as possible.

If I could make a practical choice for immortality today I would do it immediately.
