I recommend an amazing movie called Street Scene, made in 1931. It takes place entirely on the street outside an apartment building in New York City. Watching this movie is like going back in time. Street Scene has a more modern sensibility than other movies of its time: it moves along. You'll find it a lot less sentimental and cloying. Street Scene won a Pulitzer Prize when it was a play. King Vidor directed and Sylvia Sidney starred. Elmer Rice wrote the screenplay. The writing, directing and cinematography are all impressive.
