Hey Guys,

i just wanted to share a story which really made me pessimistic for a few month now.

I am 39 years old and i am doing anti aging stuff since i was 25. I used to fast for 16 hours on many days, i do a lot of excercise, i avoid alcohol, smoke and too much sun, i life healthy and i took a few supplements: Resveratrol, and since some time Nicotinamide Riboside (Nad+).

To be honest, i have no idea whether or not these interventions worked or not, but in fact i DO look much younger. I am slim, healthy, have some muscles, hair which is not grey, a young face and no wrinkles. And of course, thats exactly what i wanted to be: A young, nice looking guy who still lives more like a student than an adult. Looks like a good success story, but...

A few months ago i met a younger girl. She has seen me before and was as she told me interested in me for already a long time, and we almost instantly fell in love when whe decided to go out with each other. We met about 10 times without talking about our age or aging at any time, she always told me how much she liked me and what i meant to her.

Well, after meeting about 10 times before we ever talked about our age (strange i know, but i wasnt keen on that topic and she was neither). She was 20, i am 39. Not a problem for me, as i feel and life younger anyway (being a younger guy was excactly want i wanted to be ), but she was shocked, crying in panic, and from one minute to the next she, her friends and parents threated me like a pervert, who had done something really wrong and betrayed her with a young apperance. From one minute to the next she didnt want to have any contact with me any more, and even months later she is still mad at me and crying when she just sees me. I felt so stupid and on the other side so sorry for her.

Now maybe this is an extreme case, but just think for a moment where anti aging could lead to if it works, namely some really disturbing experiences if you want to live like you feel. You might want to stay young, but other people might not want to see you that way even if you have some success with the anti aging. And this can be really depressing.

The Parade

How exhilarating it was to march
along the great boulevards
in the sunflash of trumpets
and under all the waving flags—
the flag of ambition, the flag of love.

So many of us streaming along—
all of humanity, really—
moving in perfect step,
yet each lost in the room of a private dream.

How stimulating the scenery of the world,
the rows of roadside trees,
the huge curtain of the sky.

How endless it seemed until we veered
off the broad turnpike
into a pasture of high grass,
headed toward the dizzying cliffs of mortality.

Generation after generation,
we keep shouldering forward
until we step off the lip into space.

And I should not have to remind you
that little time is given here
to rest on a wayside bench,
to stop and bend to the wildflowers,
or to study a bird on a branch—

not when the young
are always shoving from behind,
not when the old keep tugging us forward,
pulling on our arms with all their feeble strength.

Your story is really sad, and just what did you do? Fall in love. And since when does love have an age? What you can't control is the culture that others (and yourself) are brought up in. The love you both felt was destroyed, not by itself, but by societal norms. And unfortunately, being 20, it is unlikely the girl had freed herself from the prejudices of her parent's/society's beliefs yet. That takes time, if it's ever done. Few become truly self-aware and do what they want/believe in rather than what they have been told/taught to do'.

Your story does bring to light a fact of life and aging - people discriminate. I've experienced it, everyone has, whether it's done to the young or the old. In the US it is taken to the extreme, likely because of the relentless marketing that is done to separate everyone in labeled groups, i.e., young, middle age, old, elderly, black, white, asian, etc., meat eaters, vegetarians, and on and on. The labels used and abused are nearly endless here. In other countries of the world, it is often not anywhere as extreme, and people of all ages can enjoy each others company without the stigma of age ruining the occasion. I know because that was one of the stark differences I noted from living abroad, then returning to the US. Sad.

Wow, really great story - you must have been thinking that this girl is young, though? If the girl had been a little older, say 25 or 27 it probably would not have been a problem, but at age 20 parents and friends are going to still be very protective.

I remember when I was about 16 (over 20 years ago now!), reading a story in the papers about a 30 year old guy who decided to go back to school and get some qualifications. He ended up doing really well, getting good grades and making lots of friends; because he looked so young, no one realized he was much older than everyone else. Well he got into medschool, but then it came out he was in his 30s (by then) and they withdrew his offer stating that to be a Doctor he had to be honest(?!). Well that story stuck with me to this day.

I agree this is going to be more and more of a problem in the future.

Interesting negative side effect of being an early adopter in rejuvenation. This type of stigma will probably get better as more people use rejuvenation treatments in the future.

Interesting negative side effect of being an early adopter in rejuvenation. This type of stigma will probably get better as more people use rejuvenation treatments in the future.

I cant say for sure that this behavior really worked, it could simply be the genes or a normal healthy lifestyle, i dont know. What i do know is that i am usually considered about 10 years younger, which is nice - but not significant enough to prove any anti aging method. Btw. i also tested a photo on a "guess my age" website, with a similar result. The 20 year old girl i was talking about guessed me 29 btw.

Just think of it:

By statistics, about 70% of 40 year old men in my country are at least somehow owerweight or even obese. Thats a lot. By more or less simply keeping a healthy weight (which is more often seen in younger people) you will probably look healthier and somewhat younger than an average control group. No miracle, no anti aging.

The other thing is skin care. Many men just dont do that, but with simple interventions (no smoking, not too much sun, maybe some hyaluronic acid or retinol...) you can keep it healthier and in better shape for longer. Hyaluronic acid makes the skin a little more full and prevents wrinkles from the inside, while retinol (or tretinoid) makes it a little firmer with an even coloring.

So what i am saying is that i cant really prove any claim that rejuvenation threatments worked. Its simply not significant enough considering the effects of a normal healthy life.

What i did do is to take resveratrol, about 200 mg/day once i heard about the positive effects. Did it work? I honestly dont know.

The same with NAD+. I took about 200 mg/day Nicotinamide Riboside for half a year now. I do realize a small increase in energy and concentration, but no significant change in my apperance. Maybe it slowed down some degeneration, but that is even harder to judge. Unfortunately i have no twin brother.

Regarding the 20-year-old girl: I see her from the distance once in a while and i now think she has some psychological problems which i didnt recognize at first. She was very introvert, had problems with other people, and thats why she cant just go on with her life. After enthusiastically loving me she how seems to think about nothing else than how much i fooled her by behaving and looking young while not confessing my age right away and what a bad guy i am. Probably her parents or friends confirmed her in that belief. Honestly, i never wanted to cause her such problems and i do admit that not talking about my age earlier was a mistake. She doesnt talk to me anymore, so i cant even ask for apology.

But for me all that  means: If you look younger and feel younger you might still hurt people if you also behave younger if you are not careful.

Mayflies

We shouldn’t resent the mayflies
But we do,
So full of life for a season
Long legs and breasts a-bursting
In a few years career and kids will take their toll
But tonight they’re timeless
And we yearn to be with them
Those doors are closed now
Yet do I pick at the lock
So I might be young, again.

Bukowski is consistently reliable in some of the things that matter, e.g.:

love be damned now
as love was damned when it
first arrived.

But now and then, a woman walks up,
full blossom,
a woman just bursting out of her dress

a sex creature,
a curse,

the end of it all.

Can you elaborate more please on your lifestyle, diet, habits and supplements since you started to fight aging ?

I`d like to shock some girls in my 50's looking 20's, lol  :-D

Regarding the girl : chill down dude, she does not deserve you if she puts society standards above feelings and love. This type of people have no character and are driven by the other sheeps standards.

Sure.

I do intermittent fasting since i was a teenager. It was not even intentionally, i just usually skip breakfast and only drink water or tea until lunch.

Also i do more excercise than an average person, because i only have a bike (which means about 30 minutes of easy cycling every day) plus about 3 hours of cardio excercise a week. Since i have an easy job i also have enough time to go dancing about 5 hours a week. So in total its a lot of cardio / endurance stuff.

I have normal weight (bmi 24, but this includes some muscles) and normal blood pressure.

When i was about 25 i read about resveratrol and started taking it, about 200-400 mg per day. I took that for about 15 years now. I assume that this might have had the biggest effect (judging by the time i took it), but who knows.

I sometimes take a small amount of hyaluronic acid (pills) which seem to make the skin smoother. Also i take nicotinamide riboside for one year now, which seems to give me even more energy and a younger appearance.

Is it the genes or the lifestyle? I honestly dont know, but feel free to try the same.

Thanks for your reply. Very informative.

I`m interested into asking for more questions, if you don`t mind.

I`m looking to follow your specific lifestyle daily.

So you did intermittent fasting as a teenager, well I also skip breakfast, I just don't feel like eating.

So far, it was fasting, cardio (3h per week) and reservatrol as I suspect,

but I am curious, how was your diet since you were 25 ? more carbohydrates based, what was the meat / vegetables ratio and how much was your daily sugar (Sweets) intake ? did you drank coffee / are you a coffee drinker ?

Also, when did your first grey hair went on ? I had my first grey hairs at 25 and this year (27) I got a few more.. and I hate it. How is your hair color ratio now ?

Thank you

Sure. Whenever i see someone who looks younger for his age i always ask exactly the same questions.

Regarding my diet - it was often very bad. I skip breakfast, i dont eat before 12:00 and i often dont eat for a while, yes. But i do not restrict calories. I often eat very unhealthy other times (tons of cookies  and sugar). Sometimes i dont eat for 24 hours, and then go "all you can eat" for dinner. I do not recommend anyone to do that, but as far as i can judge, all this did not affect the outcome too much.

I do NOT drink coffee, no alcohol, no smoking, no sugar based drinks (no Fanta, Cola), usually i drink only green tea or water. Sometimes dilutet fruit juice (mostly water and a little juice).

So its basically the combination unhealthy food + intermittend fasting + cardio excercise + resveratrol, later + Nicotinamide Riboside + a bit Hyaluronic acid.

When i was young i had a lot of acne and fat skin (maybe this matters somehow) and i still have a little today. I also have a mostly relaxed life and i sleep 8 hours every day.

Regarding grey hair, i dont have it yet. You can see the hairline here (age 40), i lost about 1 cm at the front in the last 15 years. The color changes between blond and brown depending on the season, but its not getting grey. It only itches a little when i eat too unhealthy. Hair thickness has improved a bit since i take Nicotinamide Riboside and skin in general improves a little with a bit of hyaluronic acid (as supplement): Attached File  hair.bmp   1.03MB   9 downloads

I do remember that there were studies on mice where the hair was affected by supplements ( more, younger looking fur after NMN or resveratrol), and there were studies where mice on unhealthy diet did much better with resveratrol. Could this be the reason? I honestly dont know.

I could also imagine that doing some kind of excercise, dancing, biking every day softens the effects of sugar intake.

Does this help?

Absolutely awesome, thank you. It helps.

I also have the same problem with acne, I don't drink coffee. Had alcohol in the past.

Still, I don't understand why you have no grey hair and I do, since 25. This'd be more awesome to understand what to do or avoid for my hair to keep color.... cause I keep it very healthy living

Thanks again

Well, i can tell you what i think about this, but i am not a doctor.

However, i try to make up my own mind by reading publications on aging and age. There seems to be a correlation between early greying / baldness and the health of arteries.

The researchers found that young men with coronary artery disease had a higher prevalence of premature greying (50% versus 30%) and male-pattern baldness (49% versus 27%) compared to healthy controls. After adjusting for age and other cardiovascular risk factors, male-pattern baldness was associated with a 5.6 times greater risk of coronary artery disease (95% confidence interval [CI] 4.0–7.8, p<0.0001) and premature greying was associated with a 5.3 times greater risk (95% CI 3.7–7.5, p<0.0001).

https://www.escardio...y-heart-disease

Some of the biological mechanisms driving coronary artery disease are also responsible for greying hair, they believe.

These include impaired DNA repair, oxidative stress, inflammation, hormonal changes and the halting of cell growth.

The findings could pave the way to identifying patients most at risk of heart disease just by looking at their hair colour.

Dr Irini Samuel, a cardiologist at Cairo University in Egypt, said: "Atherosclerosis (artery disease) and hair greying occur through similar biological pathways and the incidence of both increases with age.

https://www.telegrap...rt-attack-risk/

So instead of looking for something aginst greying (which could be treated with coloring or renaturation), would it be reasonable to look for supplements which prevent Cardio-vascular diseases?

A correlation is of course not causality, but maybe greying and vascular diseases have a common precursor disorder, which could be targeted?

To my knowledge reseveratrol could be a good candidate here, also Nad+-Precursors seem to help here and mabye other antioxidants.

Another cause of hair greying seems to be a lack of Vitamin B 12, which can be found a lot in fish (which i eat several times a week btw, but this doesnt have to mean anything of course).

But please take my advice with caution as i am no expert here.

So you are assuming that most guys that get grey hairs in early 20 or 30 have heart issues ? it's odd to corelate these 2 at the procentage of people who get grey hairs in early 20

It's only a correlation - so don't panic; guys who lose their hair or go grey early are more likely to have arterial damage than those that don't. Doesn't mean you will suffer from CVD.

Grey hair is clearly genetic and not that tightly correlated to aging, as you can clearly see by people who are grey but still have young looking skin.

Still, it would be interesting to see how prematurely grey haired folks' biological age compared to their chronological age, if only we could agree on a reliable test!

Please read the articles i quoted. There is a correlation and the hypothesis, that vascular problems and grey hair might have a common (genetic?) cause. I am not a doctor, i can only quote what experts are saying on the topic.

This by far does not mean that everybody with grey hair gets heart problems. We are talking about probabilities here. What i also could imagine is, that some supplements which contribute to arterial health also help with the hair color, e.g. if they target a shared genetic cause.

Look for example at minoxidil. This is a substance which was used to lower blood pressure and thereby help prevent damage to your blood vessels. However, it also promotes hair growth when used topically.

Bit of offtopic then guys, i`ve opened a few threads on grey hair reversal, but almost none replied there.

What's your approach on this one ? any opinion on why the real reason of grey hair is ? and what could cause the reversal of it ?

A lot of these 'anti-aging' protocols mostly hinder overall body growth so your body does not maintain itself and you start to degrow but doesn't help with aging. once you hit a certain age your looks rapidly decrease and then from there your organ function decreases. The way our body declines so much is unnatural.
