Herbert W. Armstrong is one of my favorite religious writers. I don't agree with everything he's written or done as a teacher of Scripture, but the booklet below raises questions that still demand an answer today. Instead of outright nuclear annihilation as a result of a World War III, I see global warming as the bigger threat that needs to be considered and dealt with. Global warming will, however, likely trigger a sharp increase in warfare and other violent activity over dwindling natural resources such as clean water. Is there any PURPOSE for human life? Does life, after all, have real meaning you have never realized? You need to know!

WAS HUMANITY created and put here on the earth by an intelligent and Almighty Creator for a definite PURPOSE? And if so, what is that purpose and WHY is humanity so totally unaware of it?

Or, on the other hand, did human life develop, over a period of millions of years, from lower animal species, by the process of evolution? Did we humans come to be formed and shaped as we are purely by natural causes and resident forces?

These are the two possibilities of origins. Today the theory of evolution has gained almost universal acceptance in levels of higher learning.

Yet biologists and the proponents of the evolutionary doctrine fail to show any definite purpose for the presence of the human family on this planet. Neither do they tell us why man is as he is possessing such awesome intellectual and production powers that he can fly to the moon and return safely but at the same time is utterly helpless before the onslaught of this world's problems, sufferings and evils. For that matter, neither has religion shown man his true purpose in life.

It has suddenly become imperative that we find the answer. Suddenly humanity's number one problem has become the question of SURVIVAL. And time is fast running out on us.

WHY these mounting, fast-accelerating EVILS?

Neither the evolutionary biologists nor the world's religions have so far given any explanation. They offer no solutions. They give us NO HOPE!
Question of Survival

We are now in a head-on confrontation with this frightening fact: any one of several heads of nations could plunge this world into the nuclear World War III that could erase all human life from the earth!

Has man progressed to the point where he is about to destroy himself? Is that the end of the evolutionary line? Is that the manner in which science and technology are about to administer the death-blow to all the world's religions?

Is it possible there may exist a source able to shed heretofore unrecognized new light on this life-and-death question?

Is it even possible there exists new evidence, vital to humanity's survival and the peace of the world, within the biblical revelation, heretofore unrecognized by theologians, Judaism and traditional Christianity?

If so, with the imminent possibility of the obliteration of humanity, and time running out, there is no time to be lost in searching it out.

In this crisis hour of human existence, no apology is offered for turning the spotlight on the truly startling revelation that has been rejected by science and higher education, and those vital truths overlooked by religion.

The book called the Holy Bible itself lays claim to being the revelation of basic, necessary knowledge?”the INSTRUCTION MANUAL which man's Maker sent along with the crowning product of His making?”the human MAN!

Could this least-understood of all books reveal PURPOSE behind the presence of mankind on the earth? Does it explain WHY man is as he is?”at once so creative and yet so destructive? Does it explain WHY man is so utterly helpless before his own problems, yet with such awesome intellectual and productive powers? Does it offer SOLUTIONS? Does it give us HOPE?

Okay, my last response, as I’ve officially lost interest in this thread.

Luv: I see that you all have 'faith' in the Anthropic Principle. Isn't it really just a bunch of illogical ideas. Seriously, you have to at least admit that. Each smart man that concluded them there theories on our universe etc.. without any science. They are all theories based upon one's imagination.

There is a reason that metaphysics is called metaphysics and not physics. Metaphysics is inherently speculative and not (at least currently) capable of being validated by the scientific method. Once it does become falsifiable by empirical means then it is no longer metaphysics! The reasonableness of metaphysical postulates is based on their “coherence” with current physical theory. Just because one adopts scientific reasoning as hir primary method for arriving at truth (and beliefs) does not mean that they suddenly lose hir sense of imagination. The distinction that needs to be made is that speculative imaginings do not meet the stringent criteria for being adopted as beliefs. I can entertain all sorts of metaphysical notions, but this doesn’t imply that I believe any of them strongly. Can you understand this?

I haven’t seen a single poster here demonstrate a position of “absolute faith” when it comes to the anthropic principle. It is just an idea. Please stop with the sophistry.

Since you believe a man wrote the Bible, which even if you believe God didn't write it, was pretty smart also.  It is evident from the Scripture. I definitely ascertain that the author of very intelligent. This goes for the man's obvious competence.

I believe that the bible was written by a great number of people, over long periods of time, with pieces being added and removed, and edited and changed and once again revised – over and over and over again. A memetic evolutionary process. No single person ever thought about the totality of the bible. The reason it seems so “cogent” to you is because ideas and moral sentiments that appeal to the human mind were selected for over ones that did not. Just like with biological evolution, there was a designer, but it was an unintelligent process. Can you understand this?

I believe God wrote through the men who wrote the chapters of the Bible. Anyways, the point I am trying to make, is that the author seems just as credible as the men who came up with those or all theories of the origin of life.

(1) I don’t *absolutely believe* any of the particular theories of abiogenesis. I evaluate them and say to myself, “hhhmm, that one seems interesting and reasonable.” Then I look at the other theories and see how well they stack up with my the rest of my conceptual framework (ie, my beliefs – which are arrived at using strict epistemological standards). NEVER do I believe something without evidence that allows for a high degree of confidence in said beliefs. Can you understand this?

(2) Is your belief in the biblical account of creation falsifiable? Is your belief in biblical creation consistent with known empirical realities? Are you willing to evaluate all of the current empirical data critically without first interpreting it through the lense of your preestablished beliefs? Do you understand why all of this is important to being a rational thinker?

Annddd….like I said already, I’ve officially lost interest. I’m engaged in a free will debate and an ethics debate in two other forums so this conversation with a few entrenched christians has lost its luster.

Still, I want to mention the fact that I wish both Elijah and luv the best of luck in achieving an indefinite life span. I’m confident that, after a few hundred (or thousand) years of living life they will come around to a more rational perspective.

One more thing before I peace out. Here's a small sampling of some biblical contradictions and logical inconsistencies. If Elijah or luv would like to explain them all away I'm sure the other readers of this thread would be much obliged.

I would have to write a book to respond to your post Don. Many of these things appear to be contradictions or logical inconsistencies at first glance, but actually have reasonable explanations when carefully considered. I will address the last one on your list as an example.

RE 8:7 All of the grass on earth is burned up, and then ...
REV 9:4 An army of locusts, which is about to be turned loose on the earth, is instructed not to harm the grass.

Revelation 8:7 says:

The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down upon the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.

Revelation 9:4 says:

They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

The most likely explanation is time interval. Verse 8:7 describes the work of the first angel, but, if you look at verse 9:1, you'll see that the work performed in 9:4 was performed by the fifth angel. Grass grows fairly quickly and very well may have grown back between the time the first angel destroyed it and the fifth angel advised the locusts not to harm it.

I have said it previously in this thread, although you can provide an overwhelming list of contradictions and errors from the bible, that never works on the religious becausew they like to scan the list, find an easy one, then proclaim that your list is stupid because it is -out of context, -not a contradiction anyway -a misinterpretation -etc etc

What you need to do is find one or two or three very sound examples.

For example, once again, Hares do not chew the cud. The bible says Hares and Rabbits (according to most translations) chew the cudd, infact, it quite literally says they regurgitate their food, so eating their qusi-faeces is not even an explanation.

Shortly after that phrase, it says that Bats are Fowls, and that insects are four legged.

Explain that, then we will move onto the rest of the list.


Trust me fellow atheists, there is no gain in confusing the poor Christians. Just one or two problems at a time.

According to the profile page, someone that is 20 years old that lives in Ontario (which rules out zoolander), and his Aim name and contact info is listed. If you really want to know who he is, it wouldn't be too difficult to find out.

For example, once again, Hares do not chew the cud. The bible says Hares and Rabbits (according to most translations) chew the cudd, infact, it quite literally says they regurgitate their food, so eating their qusi-faeces is not even an explanation.

Shortly after that phrase, it says that Bats are Fowls, and that insects are four legged.

I thought I addressed this issue satisfactorily way back in this thread somewhere. The law on clean and unclean meat that God gave to Moses to give to the Israelites was not intended to be a scientific taxonomy of fauna to satisfy fussy and picky biologists on the Internet. It was meant to be a health measure needed to protect the Israelites from diseases caused by unclean meat since they and their ancestors "craved" meat.

From the accounts I've read, medical science agrees that God did a pretty good job with His health laws. They were way a head of their time. In What Does the Bible Teach About Clean and Unclean Meats? it says:

Do the health laws of the Bible have a foundation in medical fact? S.I. McMillen, M.D., and David E. Stern, M.D., summarize their view of the laws God revealed to the Israelites:

"For centuries epidemics had killed thousands of Egyptians and Hebrews. Ancient treatments rarely helped. Often the 'cure' was worse than the diseases. Yet here [Exodus 15:26] God made a fantastic promise-freedom from diseases.

"God then gave Moses many health rules, filling a whole section of the Bible . . . Moses recorded hundreds of health regulations but not a single current medical misconception.

"Thousands have died through the centuries, however, because doctors ignored the biblical rules. Finally, when doctors read and tried these guidelines, they quickly discovered how to prevent the spread of epidemics.

Nutritionist David Meinz says that, even though we may not understand all aspects of the biblical dietary laws, we would be wise to follow them.

"Much of the wisdom revealed in the Bible now makes sense to us from our modern perspective," he says, "but should that mean we won't consider the areas that haven't yet been scientifically proven?

"We've only discovered that animal fat is bad for us in the last 50 years. To the Christian a century ago, the directive in Leviticus 3:17 to avoid animal fat made no sense at all. Yet it's clear to us today. What if there's something in lobster that's harmful to our health? What if we don't discover what it is until 50 years from now? Do we require scientific proof before we give the Bible the benefit of the doubt?" (Eating by the Book, 1999, p. 226).

Reginald Cherry, M.D., comments on why medical doctors and researchers have come to agree with the Bible's instruction not to eat fat.

"Why is this prohibition against fat so important for us?" he asks. "Over 53 percent of people in large industrialized countries die of heart disease. Heart disease is most commonly caused by fat deposits that build up in the arteries, often beginning in the teenage years" (The Bible Cure, 1998, p. 34, large-print edition).

Wait, so, you are saying you don't believe the Bible is perfect then, in that it is exactly true from cover to cover. To admit that there are mistakes in it (even for "picky biologists"), you are admitting that you don't know what is true and what is not. To admit that some things (admittedly minor in your mind) are incorrect, you are admitting that it is not completely a perfect book.

How then do you determine which parts are correct and which aren't?

When the mistakes are minor and do not effect substantial matters. The food laws are a good example. Everybody understood what was clean and what was unclean. The law worked for those willing to follow it.

So, regardless of whether you want to sweep this under the rug or not, it is clear that this series of phrases in the Bible are clearly WRONG. They are erroneous, not true, incorrect and false. regardless of whether the intention is good or not, and whether they fulfill that intention well or not, the information is incorrect.

Now that we have established that the Bible does in fact contain errors, let us move on to a direct contradiction. From the list above:

GE 6:19-22, 7:8-9, 7:14-16 Two of each kind are to be taken, and are taken, aboard Noah's Ark.
GE 7:2-5 Seven pairs of some kinds are to be taken (and are taken) aboard the Ark.

How can 2 and 7 be taken aboard? Maybe this is another example of an inconsequential fact in the Bible, and it doesn't realy matter? Like the rest of the Noahs Flood story.

Mike, I know what you mean and thought that that was what you meant from the word go. Yes I am quiet and artist. I have quite a bit of artwork. Artwork is one of the few things that can deeply move me. It is usually the darker stuff that moves me actually as opposed to the beautiful such as followers and scenery. It's almost flipped. the darkest things to me are the most beautiful and traditionally beautiful the darkest.

Just for the record, when I refer to artwork I refer to painting, drawing, poetry, music and basically any form of expression.
