By the way, those with the low maintenance argument about short hair. It takes more effort to cut your hair than it does to let it grow out.

These so called low maintenance types put lots of effort into their preferred shaven look. They revisit the chop shop every two weeks to make sure they don't look like those gay guys with hair, oh no!

BTW this post is complete sarcasm since it's been shown that many gay men prefer the buzz cut to the longer hair styles.

I've had both medium and short hair and can say without question that short hair rocks! Never again will I submit to the dictatorship of longer hair, with all the combing, drying, blowing, disgusting and gunky products, expensive barbers, and so on. What man who actually has an interesting life has time for that crap anyway? What woman (or man) wants her or his partner's head to smell like a chemical factory, never mind the constant primping? Short hair is complete liberation. I just buzz it myself in five minutes once a week, and then I'm ready to go. In the mornings I get up and the hair is ready. Whenever I take a shower, I pass a towel over it and it is dry and ready. And, fortunately, I run in a subculture where very short hair is considered more attractive and erotic than longer hair, which suits me just fine.

Then you don't mind women who put absolutely no effort into looking pretty? Shave their heads? No make up? No anti-aging skin creams? Let their armpit hair grow? Don't shave their legs? Don't paint their nails? uh huh......

No, I don't mind those women at all. I don't mind any women. I'm gay, you nitwit. But I guess since my hair is buzzed, I'm just one of those assholes who don't fit into your narrow-minded and superficial world view that defines people by their hairstyles.

More guys have short hair/buzzed cuts than long hair/stylized cuts so stop pretending like you're in some minority. Well in the sense that you are openly gay you are in the minority but with the sense that you shave your head, you're definitely not. Stop acting like some fashion rebel. IMO it's a bit sad, When someone writes a long thoughtful and intelligent post about immortalism they do not get any feedback at all, but if someone comments how young a celebrity looks or any other gossip they get immediately huge amounts of replies.

Note that I don't think it's anything wrong with threads like this however.

The same thing I often notice on blogs, An intelligent professor may write about new exciting research in a field and receives no interest at all, but a 14 year old girl showing her new piercing in a blog post is immediately drenched in thousands of comments....

Granted your point, but I don't think this is as dumb a topic as a 14 year olds new piercing. I think it basically hits the psyche in all the right (or wrong) places. Plus What I 'attempted' to discuss here was the fact that men don't cross as many lines as women do, especially in the western world. Yet men are suppose to be the rebellious ones, according to the geniuses on this site.

Appearance makes a statement, good or bad. Clothes, hair, build, cleanliness -- each change attracts a different set of people. The way I look and dress works for one group but doesn't work so much for another. For instance, I'm probably too metro for most country women. Is that bad? Is that good? It's neither.

The first question is: who or what type do you want to attract? That helps dictate how you want to appear. Long hair might not be the answer. Short hair might not be the answer. It all depends on who you want and what attracts them.

Did anyone mention personality? It's probably the single-most important factor, as long as the appearance isn't too far away from what the person of interest prefers.

Guys underestimate the role hair style plays in how we appear.

You should have stopped there. It's a valid starting point -- without the animosity.

Too many guys just think short, buzz cuts are the manly thing to do and thus take no chances outside of that. It's pathetic and I would say that limited perspective is another reason not alot of women are attracted to groups like this.

Maybe these guys aren't interested in maximizing their attraction. Do we all have to obsess about our appearance? If you're one of the long-haired attractive people, aren't you glad you have less competition?

In my generation women are increasingly more attracted to guys with longer hair-styles and who have no fear of being percieved as 'feminized' because the hair is (oh my gosh!) longer than 2 inches! They shy away from military cuts (understandably).

The trend does seem to be moving away from short hair. But it's by no means a universal trend. Style is much more fragmented now than it was in prior generations. Everything coexists. Even styles that were once out are now back in, probably permanently. Some styles will dominant for a period. But I doubt we'll ever see a near uniform style like we did decades ago.

After all, if men are suppose to be the more rebellious gender (according to many of you) why do so few show it on the outside? Fear!

Probably. We all have those things to which we cling. Is long hair your thing? Are you afraid of short hair?

In summation, I don't think the average guy is rebellious or cutting edge. I think he likes to convince himself in his own head that he is.

Long hair no longer signifies only rebellion. Long hair can mean a lot more because so much more is acceptable now. That guy with the tattoos -- is he a rebel? Maybe. Maybe not. That clean-cut looking guy. What is he hiding behind his mundane appearance?

Appearance is still somewhat of an indicator. But when focusing on a single aspect of appearance like hair, you're not going to make solid generalizations.

I just looked at old school class photos from the 1965 to 1970 (1st thru 6th grades) In the photos all the boys had short to hair and all the girls had long hair. I grew up near Chicago so the photos are probably common for that time.

I remember being told that the reason that men had short hair was because durning the Roman Empire the soldiers cut their hair short so that the enemy couldn't grab holt and kill them. Women have long hair to cover their body as required by the Torah/Old Testament. In the 60's men grew out their hair to protest the Vietnam Conflict. To have short hair is to be pro-violence (Like a Roman soldier) and to have long hair was anti-violence. Note that Jesus is shown with long hair because he was a peace-maker. Skinheads now shave their heads to be pro-Nazi, but if you watch the old movies from WWII, the real Nazis had their hair kept short but not shaved.
I wonder how hair styles will change in the future. What will be the styles 1000 years from now look like? I hope to find out someday...

Maybe you shouldn't believe everything you are told. In any case, any associations of hairstyle with political or social philosophy are long gone and certainly have little relevance today. Even back in the 60s, the categorizations you mention were far from absolute even in the Anglo-Saxon world, and far from universal. There was and is a lot going on in the world outside of U.S. conventions (which do not exist to speak of even in the U.S. any longer).
