There's much information around as to the theoretical reasons for using acetyl-l-carnitine (ALCAR), and I'm more than satisfied with that.
Sadly its hard to tease out what compounds have what effect in nootropic regimes due to the tendency of everyone to take five hundreds compounds at once.
For those of you who added ALCAR to a regime by itself (i.e. without concurrently adding other compounds), what benefits do you think you have obtained from it? Short-term (i.e. upon administration) and long-term benefits from repeated administration.

Currently, I'm only taking ALCAR occasionally interspersed with L-theanine. (and a cup or two of coffee daily) I have more stuff ordered from Smi2le. Been six days now. Keeping fingers crossed on that.
Short term, I've noticed an increased energy level, similar to, but also unlike a caffeine buzz; it's "cleaner". More focus, an increased desire to move around (but not the jittery leg shaking type, it just feels good to do it), more motivation, and a slight increase in mood/reduction of social anxiety. I've been taking it for about two weeks now.

I've been taking ALCAR for about a month (I also take a multi-vitamin, fish oil, and gingko). I have not noticed much effect.

You need RALA with ALCAR.

I forgot to mention that the ALCAR I have (300mg) comes with 10mg of ALA.

You need 600 mg RALA not ALA for 2 grams alcar per day to achieve the beneficial effects.

Ray Sahelian, M.D. (he created physician formulas) recommends doses of most things which are way too small....

Steven,
You've posted regarding deprenyl and now acetyl carnitine, if you're 40+ that is one thing, but if you're 20 that would be another thing in terms of doses (I'm 44)
Nootropi: were the studies that the 600 mg of ALA came from done on...older animals?

Scott,
I'm 30. I'm trying to address mild add, and chronic anxiety. I've always had the ADD symptoms, but the anxiety is pretty recent, from 6+ years of constant stress. I'm shooting for a dopamine boost to correct the anxiety. I tried L-tyrosine, but the 500mg pills I got was ~way~ too much. About 75mg is pretty good. I have Phenibut and Vinpocetine ordered from Rizzer as well. (also, trying to watch my breathing, posture, diet, and getting 30 min of exercise a day)

Took 1500 mgs.
Feel REALLY overstimulated, irritable, manic and itchy.
and am currently crashing and it's difficult to type.
Has anyone else had this happen to them?
The same thing happens to me with regular doses of piracetam and other substances.
Fuck why can't I be normal.

The thread LIVES - back from the dead! What has science done!!??
Please, for your own sake, don't take so much. You aren't abnormal, people just react differently to chemicals. I personally can't stand even 500 mg ALCAR, I start making errors in the lab and my extremities get cold
I'd try dosing 100 mg and titrate up from there.
Also, piracetam tends to be overdosed IMHO - the multiple gram doses seem ludicrous to me, as I get sleepy at anything over about 400 mg.

People are different. I used to get more of a boost from ALCAR. Two grams in the morning before breakfast doesn't make me overstimulated now -- perhaps a higher fat intake with breakfast makes a difference.

around 2 years ago, i started taking ala+alcar each 500mg,
i am taking out or decreasing dosage of some supplements these few months , now i take separate pills, RLA 500mg and alcar 1000mg,
i take alcar 500mg in the morning, and 500mg at night,
as for myself, i do feel more concentrated, increased energy, clearer head.
i am not going to increas the dosage any further for now , probably lower my dosage to one time a day, coz i read from other threads that it might be harmful , for the long term, same as RLA.

I've been up twitching and itching all fucking night. EVERYTHING pisses me off. This NEVER happens to me. I smashed so much shit and my parents almost called an ambulance. Quite frankly the MOST irritated I have ever been in my entire life.
I mean fuck. How can this be normal? I was diagnosed with bipolar and add 2 years ago, was on lithium for a year. Went off it a year ago, and I've been fine. I mean absolutely no mood swings at all. This never happens.
Arrg I just want it to stop. I just want something that helps me concentrate but that doesn't fuck me up every which way.

That's good news - it works. Now just find a more reasonable dose and you are good to go. It should wear off in a couple hours.
