I recently received a newsletter from The Maximum Life Foundation in which they highly recommended use of a product called Protect120. This product is a transdermal form of glutathione and claims to have a superior ability to penetrate cells of the body. Is there any solid evidence that this actually works?

Protect120 isn't glutathione, but rather dipalmitoyl glutathione; a hydrophobic ester of glutathione. It might be transdermally bioavailable, at least I couldn't rule it out, but that doesn't mean that it's useful. Does enough get in to do any good? Does it get de-esterified once in the body? What happens when it's used? Any beneficial effects? It costs a hundred dollars for a 4 oz. tube, and seems to be lacking in evidence of efficacy. If I was looking for a cosmetic effect, I'd go with things that we know work, like topical retinoids, glycolic acid, etc. For a systemic effect, I would look first at diet.
