I started taking ALCAR early last year and while the effects were amazing (I aced all of my exams in medical school in the first 5-6 months) while taking 1-1.5 grams a day with raw cacao every other day. Fast forward late last year and my anxiety and depression reached breaking point where I ended up failing and have to put off some time. I also attribute the anxiety/extreme irritability to ALCAR (a day after I stopped taking it everything would be back to normal). I have now been off of it for a couple months but I still miss the stimulant effects of it and really feel I can't study anywhere as efficiently. Nothing I have tried can compare (Ritalin, caffeine, cacao, deprenyl, tyrosine, nicotine etc.) Is there anything that I could do? I tried lowering the dosage but I don't get the same effects. How can this be explained? Increased dopamine with decreased serotonin?

Depending on the dose ALCAR is said to have both anxigenic and anxiolytic properties. If you tried lowering your dosage to, say, 500mg on an empty stomach twice per day you might see if that helps lesson the anxiety. I found that anything over a gram for me would make me a bit anxious.

The thing is though that over 500 mg would make me extremely stimulated, edgy, anxious and irritable/angry (but my focus/retention is amazing). Less than 500mg I barely feel anything at all.

Yeah I noticed this too. But irritability + anxiety can be a sign of low blood sugar, which most people consider a benefit of ALCAR. Some of us already have low fasting glucose though!
