The safest and most effective sunless tanning is some carotenoids that can be taken in chronic high doses needed for permanent change in skin pigment. Carotenoids are natural, permanent, improves tanning, and even act as permanent defense against UV light-mediated skin damage unlike most sunless tanning products. Also, carotenoids have been linked to more attractive skin tone than suntan. Carotenoids occur naturally in fruit and vegetables, giving them their strong colours. - Wikipedia/Sunless_tanning

Carotenoids not sunbeds make you more attractive.
When the psychologists got their subjects to take 15 mg beta carotene every day for 8 weeks, they saw that the subjects' skin became yellower in colour too. - ergo-log.com/carotenoids.html

Will my skin tone really improve if I drink 100 grams carrot juice (approx 15 mg B-carotene according to the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and the Environment ) and 100 grams tomato juice (approx. 10 mg Lycopene) a day? Has anyone ever tried this?

And is it better to add a little fat (some nuts or olive oil) for a higher bioavailability?

Thanks in advance!

I eat 5 tablespoons of organic tomato paste, mixed with 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil every day. This is in line with the values used in this study:

Br J Dermatol.,

2011 Jan;164(1):154-62. doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2133.2010.10057.x. Epub 2010 Nov 29.

Rizwan M, Rodriguez-Blanco I, Harbottle A, Birch-Machin MA, Watson RE, Rhodes LE., "Tomato paste rich in lycopene protects against cutaneous photodamage in humans in vivo: a randomized controlled trial."

I usually mix it into a mess of lightly steamed veg, always including some carrots for extra beta-carotene.

AFAIK, taking carotenoids with oil improves absorption, especially if you're taking them in a natural form (eating carrots, for example). Lycopene at least reduces sunburn but might be good for collagen too:

people who consumed tomato paste had 33% more protection against sunburn compared to a control group after 12 weeks. The level of protection was equal to a sun protection factor (SPF) of 1.3, which is low compared to a good sunscreen but still quite significant. The daily amount was 55 grams (or five tablespoons) of tomato paste consumed with olive oil. It also boosted the level of procollagen in the skin, which suggests potential reversal of the skin aging process.

How to Get Natural Sun Protection by Eating the Right Foods

Also, there was a study showing improved skin characteristics from 10 mg lutein. It's pretty cheap to get in powder form, which is absorbed well.

Hi Now,

You might enjoy this entry from Don Matesz' blog:

And yes, best to add a bit of MUFA rich oil to those veggies. From Purdue University New Service:

No, I just read a thread stating that beta carotene damages skin-
