Starting a daily methylene blue journal, for those that are still unaware of this supposedly underrated nootropic.

On day one, I approximated a MB solution at about 1 mcg per drop. The calculations I used were checked multiple times for soundness, although there is an accuracy limit due to the definition of a “drop” on volume, which I assumed was about 20 drops per ml. Upon testing this using a ml syringe, it was slightly over this, but the tools I used (droppers, syringe, bottle of 1% MB itself) all produced different drop sizes with an estimated average at slightly over 20 drops per ml.
Regardless, I produced a 25ml solution containing approximately 1mcg per drop.

Day 1:

(dose 1)

I began to self-trial with my MB solution at around 4:30 on Tuesday, January 22, 2013. I decided to administer the dose orally, from the dropper, at a volume of about 1 to 3 drops. This inconsistency comes from the inability to tell how much I’m squeezing while the dropper is in my blind spot during administration. This was done sublingually – under the tongue – for superior absorption. I am unsure about MB’s oral availability when going through the GI tract, so I will continue doing this under the tongue for the trial.

After my first dose, I felt little to nothing in the first 5 minutes, but after I began to shrug off thoughts of the pointlessness of this trial, I began to feel some effects. My mind feels a bit focused. I’m neither necessarily any less clouded nor anxious, but I feel as if it’s easier to stay on track with my tasks. It’s normally a rare thing for me to be able to sit down and write as much as I have. I also feel a strange sense of energy, and my heart rate seemed to rise for a few minutes.
Similar to when I was trying sporadic doses during my winter break from college, I feel a sort of pressure near the front of my head, towards the top. If I’m not mistaken, this is the area of the brain responsible for execution and planning. Also JUST NOW I noticed that I’m typing quite well on my symbol-less DAS keyboard, which I was having trouble with before. Maybe I’m just nuts, but it really does seem a bit easier now. It might be worth noting that I put on some classical music. Brahms, piano concerto. It can make me feel badass, contributing to the energizing effects.
Not sure when this energized effect will wear off, but I’ll be sure to note it in a bit. Also, it’s perfectly reasonable to assume this is a glorified (or normal, actually) placebo effect. It could take some measures to see if it works truly or not. I’m considering making a batch of half actual doses, and half doses that are just blue food coloring made to look like MB, and compare the consistency of effects after this trial is over.

(couple hours later)

So quite a while later (it’s now 7:55), I’m still feeling pretty good. My concentration is still going. I also have felt pretty energetic and manic. At this point it’s totally either the MB at a finally perfect dose, or I’m psychologically blessed by a placebo. I have gotten so much done. The concentration effect is what’s most interesting. I can still get distracted, but this makes it easier for me to regain control and do awesome things.
Still no waning effects still have the slight pressure on the top of my head near the front, but it’s not as bad now. Pretty awesome!

Hopefully more to come tomorrow. I can be forgetful, but maybe the MB will help

Please do continue this. I will be reading. =) Sad no one else has posted. But I promise I will be following your reports.

I do have a few questions, if you truly feel interested in answering:
  • What prompted your purchase of MB?
  • Do you feel the effects so far are worthy of it's price?
  • When you sleep, please let me know the quality of such sleep.
  • What else are you taking?
  • Any mental illnesses worth noting?

Thanks for the read! I was hoping my log would help, or at least interest some people. I'll answer your questions and follow up with day 2:

1, I purchased methylene blue after reading another article about taking it at tiny (even nanogram) doses, if you google "methylene blue nootropic", it's one of the first links on the list.

2. Given that it's incredibly cheap (a $4 bottle should theoretically last me over 15 years at my current dosage), it's very much worth a try,

3. I usually sleep alright, not super, but alright enough to get me through the day, MB doesn't seem to have an effect on sleep, except that it causes me to want to be productive and not sleep as much.

4. I haven't been consistently taking anything lately, especially now so that I don't ruin this MB trial by contaminating it with other things. However, in the past month I started taking ALCAR, which worked wonders in terms of energy levels and motivation. I'm waiting until I get more of it before I start taking ALCAR regularly. Also, I've been on and off using 5HTP for anxiety, which has also worked wonders. I've been into noots for about a year and have taken many things, most of which haven't helped significantly, but now I'm starting to find my sweet spot in terms of drugs, Racetams don't seem to work well for me, btw.

5. I am not currently diagnosed with anything, although I've always been a little bit socially awkward and have had anxiety issues. Recently, I've been hit with bouts of depression that have lasted a couple days, and horrible anxiety that breaks my focus. I have always considered myself intelligent, but sometimes lacking the drive to reach my full potential. When I do have drive, I have a great degree of skill, energy, and motivation. It was only recently that I figured out how I'm holding myself back, and nootropics have helped in that regard.

Anyways, enough about my psychological profile! Here's day 2!

Day 2

Today, I decided to start the day with a drop of methylene blue and see if it helped my ability to concentrate in class. In previous semesters, I have had a lot of trouble focusing on what the professor was teaching. I would often get distracted and play on my phone, and mostly because I kinda gave up on trying to focus or I had decided to just learn from the book later. Very stupid, I know. Usually outside of class, I can focus about as well as the average person. I don’t necessarily believe I have ADD or anything, but sometimes I find that concentrating on a person talking for an hour to be difficult.

(dose 1)
So, I woke up around 9 O’clock this morning, felt mostly energetic, but perhaps somewhat groggy from waking up in the middle of a deep sleep cycle. I took a drop or so from my little plastic eyedropper, and decided to take a shower. I noticed some of the same things from yesterday – my heart went a little faster, I started to feel a little bit hyper as well. As I got dressed, I noticed that the energy I feel is mostly mental. I don’t really feel more physically stimulated than usual, but I feel pretty speedy in my head. The good thing is, it’s the kind of speedy that I found easily controlled and focused. I also noticed the same “frontal head pressure” as I did yesterday, although it wasn’t as much of a bother (and it wasn’t really before, either).
This speedy yet focused energy helped me a lot during classes. I was still finding myself inattentive for brief moments, but this was reduced to the extent where I didn’t miss any important information and was able to take notes – another activity I’ve rarely done until now. The feeling was a bit overwhelming, but I liked it.

(dose 2)

After classes were over and I had dealt with some errands, I went home and decided to have another drop of MB, as I feel like the effects had worn off some. The second dose was a good pick-me-up, and it fully woke up my mind within a few minutes. I’m still getting similar effects, although I do have anxiety a lot and I wish it helped with it. The energy I get from MB doesn’t necessarily increase my anxiety, but in general, anxiety seems to get in the way of my focus a lot. I’m feeling anxious right now, so I’ll take some 5-HTP. Fortunately, the dosage of MB I take is too low to exert significant MAOI effects, so it’s safe to take the two together.
More to come later, I still feel like placebo could be a possibility, but the consistency of the effects is starting to convince me otherwise.

As I said, still following your log. And I have a few more questions:
  • Where did you purchase your MB?
  • You said you dosed after waking up, now how long till you felt the effects of said dose?
  • What is your current dose? (You say you use an eye dropper, I assume you would have to 'eye' the amount your taking but do give a guesstimate if your not sure.)

I will be following up, and I rather enjoy your detailed interaction log. =) Will be here tomorrow for your follow up)

On a more casual note:

I too feel as if I am 'limited' by certain aspects of my brain and personality which is precisely why I am interested in Nootropics. =)

1. I actually got it from microscope.com. I could have gotten it from amazon, but then it'd be the fish tank solution stuff. For some reason, I'm afraid that the fish tank solution would be more likely to be less pure MB, containing some other fish medicine as well. Once again, if I can attest that MB is a useful nootropic, it'd certainly be the cheapest.

2. Whenever I dose, including then, I start to "feel" it within a few minutes. That is, the wakefulness and head pressure feeling (which is gradually going away with each dose). The perceived lift in mental energy occurs typically about 10 to 15 minutes in, and lasts for couple hours. The downside to using MB is likely the need to redose a few times, although taking it under the tongue is easy, and doesn't require that you need food to absorb it,

3, My dose has remained at about 1 drop, which in my dilution is an estimated 1 microgram, Due to human error, my actual dosage could be anywhere from around 500 nanograms to 2 micrograms. My math suggests I'm taking exactly 1mcg in theory though, here it is below:

let 1ml =~ 20 drops (got this figure from some thread on longecity)
let 1ml volume = 1gram mass (since 1 liter of water is a kilogram in weight)

My bottle of methylene blue (original solution) is 15ml of a 1% solution, or 1 part MB per 99 parts water
So, I have 15 grams of liquid, approximately. 1% of this is 150 milligrams of methylene blue

From this, we can figure out how much MB is in a drop of undiluted solution: (150mg / (20 * 15)) = 150mg/300drops
This gives us half a milligram per drop or original solution, or 500 micrograms.

Since I want there to be 1mcg per drop (in order to test this low dosage), I dilute one drop of MB into 25ml of water.
This gives us (500/25) = 20mcg of MB per ml of dilute solution.
Since a ml is 20 drops, we can assume each drop now contains 1 microgram of Methylene blue.

Day 3

(dose 1)
Today, I woke up this morning and immediately took a drop of MB. I was in too much of a rush to get to class, so I didn’t pay too much attention to how I felt. I did notice my heart rate increasing for about a minute after administration. When I got to class, I found it very easy to listen, pay attention, and absorb the information being spoken. After running some usual errands, I went back home to do my homework and clean the place up. Before sitting down to do work on the computer, I took a drop of MB. This time, I didn’t notice any of the initial effects as much – I felt normal for a while. After giving it a few minutes though, I started to feel the energized feeling, which I am still feeling as I write this about an hour later.

(dose 2)
Well, I kinda cheated. I decided to take 1.5 grams of ALCAR to aid in studying and relieve some minor depression and anxiety. That reaaaalllly helped, there’s no supplement quite like ALCAR, and we’ll see if long term MB comes close. At the very least, it does in price! I’ve been on an ALCAR roll for a while, and I just took another drop of MB. I didn’t get the heart rate change or head pressure feeling, but I very quickly experienced a slight increase in energy. Given that ALCAR works on metabolism in the mitochondria like MB does, it could even be synergistic.
(dose 3)

Another thing I had earlier was caffeine, in a neuro sonic (random wannabe nootropic energy drink with AGPC and caffeine mostly). I drink this beverage at around 4 O’clock, and I had begun to have a bad caffeine crash around 10PM. I had to keep myself awake to do a programming project that I hadn’t started, so I took a drop of MB. Within a few minutes, my energy levels were better. I wasn’t back to the levels I had with the caffeine + ALCAR, but I was a lot better off. I think the MB saved 5 points for me. Still kicking.

Sorry for being late to responding, I am still reading your reports and I am still hoping to see how it plays out in the long run. I really do hope you continue to experience great results, but I must ask a few things:

How much of an increase in BP rate do you experience, please note there is many ways to tell without electronics. A quick Google will provide many ways to do so.

Would you consider attempting a placebo test? It sounds simple enough to do and would add much more credibility. That is not to say that I don't find your logs credible, just with some people experiencing nothing, it would be an added bonus to show that this isn't just a placebo, and honestly does work for you.

Can't wait to hear back, and to read day 4. =)

Hey guys! sorry again about the loooong delay. I'll be putting the rest up shortly, here's day 4.

Day 4

Today I was pretty busy, had my bad round of classes today, plus I was distracted because I had a family member in the hospital. I mindlessly took some MB in the morning to no immediate effect, although maybe a slight uplift within a few minutes later. Again, concentration seems to be easier now than it has been in recent years, and I’m not sure whether or not to attribute this to MB usage or not. The “noticeable” effects like the frontal head pressure seem to have vanished almost entirely. It’s still there, but it takes longer to feel it and it’s not as strong as at first. Perhaps I’m starting to build up the substance or effects in my brain, so I’m not “feeling” much anymore, but I still have the seemingly improved cognition as opposed to before. It does act as an antioxidant in the brain – which would enable whatever little age-related damage to repair itself (I’m only 21, but it’s still true that people gain damage over time) After some time with antioxidants, it’d seem to make sense that a repaired brain is a better functioning brain.

Just because I mentioned age, I’ll note my other physical characteristics:

I’m about 6’1”, 160 pounds, pretty slim body which is sensitive to most drugs. I also have poor blood circulation to my hands, so they get cold too easily. I have a high tolerance to alcohol naturally, and I always get paradoxical effects from anticholinergic drugs like Benadryl, which tends to make me hyper instead of putting me to sleep.

Usually after about a half hour now, I start to feel an energetic uplift whenever I take my MB. So overall the “noticeable” parts are disappearing as time goes on, but I’m still seeing some cognitive benefits.

Heeeeeey guys. I once apologize for my failure to be consistent. The problems I mentioned before are still "in effect" and I haven't had access to my MB as well. I did not forget about this experiment though, and once I'm back home and taking MB again I can continue the log. Sounds good?

Day 5

(dose 1)

This morning, I returned home to my college apartment after spending a couple days in Boston. The T was slow this morning, and I got back an hour later than I anticipated. I was in a rush to prepare for classes that day, including a quiz. I did, however, remember to drip some methylene blue before setting off. I’m getting back on track with using it regularly, and now I can witness MB’s effects after having “withdrawn” from it for a couple days.

I took my drop, expecting to feel little at first and then later feeling a rush of concentration and energy. Indeed, I felt basically nothing at first. I actually noticed very little from this dose, as I didn’t feel any different sitting in my first class. Also I would like to note that I’ve been feverish the last couple days with a lot of nasal congestion, which was fixed right up by a little Sudafed. My second class gave me a quiz, which I utterly beasted with only about 3 minutes studying beforehand (if I hadn’t studied, I in fact could have not done well). I had acquired a good sense of focus. It’s possible that the stimulating effects from Sudafed could be part of it, but it wasn’t quite a stimulant feeling I had. Maybe I noticed it more because I was actively thinking for the quiz.
I retained a good degree of focus the rest of the day, and this was interesting because my day started off pretty crappy to be honest. I felt fatigued and stupid that morning, but felt awesome ever since around my first class.

(dose 2)

Later around 7, I started to make dinner. I was cooking brown rice, which takes forever to cook, so I decided to take another drop of MB and study for my exam tomorrow. I made an effort to really keep that liquid under my tongue, letting all of it absorb while avoiding first-pass metabolism. Within a minute or two I felt what could only be described as similar to the “frontal head pressure” I had felt in the first few days of the trial. Now I’m starting to think that I was more conscious of how well I was diffusing the liquid under my tongue near the beginning, and I cared less about it in later days before my unplanned break. Also, accompanying the pressure was an odd feeling I hadn’t experience before. I had a short-lasting slight brain fog and I seemed to be getting more sensitive to light. This didn’t last long, but it was a bit weird feeling.

I slowly began to feel more focused, in a more pronounced sense than earlier. I feel my attention focusing on one thing at a time, something I need to do. I’m feeling a bit more awake now as well, although I feel as if part of my brain got a little tired. This I can possibly blame my fever/cold for, though.

I have decided that for the sake of my fellow nootropics users, I need to do a placebo test on myself. I need to get a blue dye of a similar shade, and make a solution that resembles the MB identically. I might even have to add a slight bitterant in order to mimic its slightly bitter sensation under the tongue. I will then have someone else (possibly my roommate) place the placebo in one vial, and the real MB in another. Then, I should take each one for a week and report the results, possibly adding a day or two in between to cleanse any possible aftereffects or observe any sort of withdrawal.

Would anyone else have anything to add about the placebo trial? I would also like others to join my experiment and report their findings so we can determine the efficacy of methylene blue as a true nootropic.

EDIT: Another idea I just thought of was instead of trying to make an MB look-alike and test-alike, I would simply color both solutions and add some sort of taste to mask the identity of both substances. I'm too paranoid of being able to pick out which is which, so I'm thinking of measures to completely mask which is which.

Just got back from a long trip, Nice to see you are still updating!

I can't really suggest much you haven't thought of for the Placebo test. But I really do hope to hear any news from you. I'm grabbing money to purchase some noots and MB has me quite interested, considering it's price. =)

Thanks for reading still! Also may I ask what you are planning on taking?

Day 6

Today, I pondered a new question: does methylene blue solution degrade at all? I’ve been mostly using the same liquid for about a week, and I’m noticing the effects slightly weaken over time. Also, it might be just my imagination, but the liquid seems to have become a lighter blue than before. I’ve heard briefly that yes, it can degrade over time, but it might be in terms of years, not days. Again, it might not at all, just wondering.

(dose 1)

I woke up this morning and mindlessly “popped a drop” per usual, and noticed no immediate effects. I’m not sure if I even felt anything later that morning, other than a slightly more awake feeling in the morning than usual. I did however go to my exam and totally beast it, like I did to my quiz yesterday. I won’t go as far to say that the MB helped me DURING the test itself (although it might have), but during classes my attention span has been consistently and significantly better, which helped me know all of the information being tested.

(dose 2)

When I got home from my exam and a dining hall raid, I dosed again after getting a very cloudy and woozy feeling in my head (unsure why, could be sickness/allergy fatigue related). I again didn’t notice any head pressure, but my cloudiness eased and I now feel a sort of fuzzy feeling in my head, which MB will sometimes do. It’s fairly strong, and a slightly good feeling. For this dose, I took about 3 or 4 drops, though.

I am beginning to think that overall, the MB is helping me in more of a non-noticeable but generalized sense. I believe my ability to pay attention is improved, and my absorption of information is now superior.

Now, does anybody know some cheap, inert food coloring drops I can order to do the placebo tests? Amazon surprisingly has nothing really good.

It's really undecided, considering CILTP+Uridine+Theanine+ALCAR

I have ADHD-I, which I wish to treat. I cannot stand doctors...and the constantly meeting. So, This is the route I go. =)

Awesome! Sometimes I have some ADHD symptoms myself - notably the inability to stay on task sometimes. I believe the MB could have helped me, though. What's the CILTP and uridine about?

Day 7

So! I’ve now reached a whole week on methylene blue, awesome! Today in addition to having three doses of MB, I had an Xtra energy shot in the mid-morning. The main thing in there that affects me is the N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine, which tends to give me a dopamine rush later in the day. Very enjoyable indeed, woooo!

Today I’ll break tradition and sum up my three doses in one statement: it wasn’t very noticeable. I don’t believe I’m feeling any head pressure at administration anymore, and my concentration in classes was not so good today, although my cognition was fairly good. One thing to note though: I didn’t have much sleep at all (about 5 hours), so it could go to show that I’ve been performing better than I could have without it.

Now, I think I need some more formal testing. I need a washout period and take an IQ test before and after a period of MB dosing. Plus some other tests. I’m still technically a noob around these parts so any contribution would be helpful.

CILTP's main focus is memory improvement using PDE4 Inhibitors along with cAMP increasers to increase the formation of memories. In one sentence: cAMP=Good, Increases memory. PDE-4=Bad, Decreases cAMP.

Uridine, well I'm not sure of it's mechanism of action. I know a lot of anecdotal reports seem to be favorable. I am interested in taking high doses to dull emotional response, and hyper focus. I might order some tonight.

The effects seem to warring off then...Damn. This is not good news at all, but as always...I accept a ugly truth, more easily then a beautiful lie.

Day 8 and 9
After a disappointing run with the methylene blue on day 7, I started to question whether or not a placebo trial was going to be worth it. If the stuff didn’t work long term, I probably don’t care much.

I did some thinking over the last couple days and questioned two factors in my “experiment”. One was the absorption into my body. Was I letting the MB absorb well enough under my tongue? The other one was the degradation of my solution. I was letting it sit out in the open in a plastic dropper, and after a week or so the walls of the dropper began to stain an unquestionable blue color.
I figured that if the plastic dropper was absorbing the dye, then I was progressively taking a lower dose every day. I realized that I’m going to need a glass dropper now, which shouldn’t absorb the dye. However for now, I decided to refill the dropper with fresh solution from my syringe (with most of the original mixed solution still in it) and try the MB again.

(dose 1)

Voila! I made sure to take my usual drop of MB and keep it under my tongue for at least 30 seconds to a minute. How about that? It works again! I’m feeling a slight frontal head pressure, and increase of energy, and a boosted concentration on tasks once again. I’ll keep posting as I see if it keeps on working so long as I keep a “fresh” solution readily available!
Cheers!

So... has repeated consumption of a microscopy staining agent killed you yet?

I have some that I used to use to stain microorganisms... I would have never imagined it was ingestible.

Haha no I didn't die...but I kinda gave up on the MB because it seemed to be too inconsistent...The reason why I stopped my personal log is because of a sudden increase in personal life factors around that time. Perhaps I'll have another go at it...but would rather do a day-by-day on the CILTEP stack.

The MB was interesting especially due to the price, and CILTEP costs a good amount of money to try.

I realize I may be late in adding my experiences to this post, but I have found that mixing Methylene Blue with Willard Water (or any catalyst water such as Crystal Energy Drops) and adding liposomal Vit. C and a dropper of C 60, greatly enhances the efficacy of MB overall. Some people here have remarked that the euphoric effect of MB diminishes after a week or two. This combo has kept it quite potent even at low doses. I have not seen Willard Water or other catalyzed water treatments mentioned much in this forum, but they absolutely add to the potency of any nootropics and a little goes a long way when added to the MB & Liposomal C mixture. Anyone else try it?

Hey guys! sorry again about the loooong delay.

So overall the “noticeable” parts are disappearing as time goes on, but I’m still seeing some cognitive benefits.

like I said, try adding Willard Water or Crystal Energy Drops and liposomal Vit C. It amps MB up even in small doses.
