I consumed coffee for a bit over a year for performance purposes. While it did initially improve my efficiency, I think that it stopped working well. During the work day, when I was drinking a lot of coffee, my mind was a little less stable. Partially due to the mental strain (programming 8+ hours solid) and partially due to the caffeine, I could see light CEVs quite easily when I closed my eyes and tried for them near the end of the day. By the end of the work day, I was always extremely tired.
Coffee became more of a way to restore myself to normal than actually improve my performance. Since easing off caffeine slowly (to avoid strong withdrawal), I have more energy, and I feel a lot less loopy. When I do want some extra energy, I drink coffee, but I don't make it my routine, and I always consider the fact that it will decrease my performance the next day. I have spoken to one other friend who had a similar experience, having more energy off caffeine than with it.
