I notice that when i take one of those two i tend to have a mild headache even on low doses like 100mg of L Theanine or 400mg of Magnesium(Magnesium Oxide, Magnesium Citrate and Magnesium Aspartate) both from Now.
In my research this is not a common side effect at low doses.

Odd, I typically use magnesium to treat and theanine to prevent headaches.

My guess is that this may be to do with nitric oxide. Some people are a little sensitive to nitric oxide and can get headaches when blood vessels reconstrict after dilation. In my opinion, you could take this as a sign of health--an indication that you do not need to take these supplements.

Theanine has given me slight headaches before. Magnesium has never caused a headache.
I did notice when I get Suntheanine from NOW I never got headaches from it but with regular theanine I would get a headache.
Are you sure your getting headaches from magnesium or is it that you are taking them taking?

Do you take your L-theanine with or without caffeine? If you take it without coffee or caffeine, try adding some and see if that helps.

Those two are the only supplements that contain rice flour and rice contain gluten that has been linked with headaches and migraines. I am on a elimination diet to found food sensitivities and gluten is one of them. That explain alot.

ALCAR doesnt sit right with some people, especially those with any form of hypothyroidism, mild or not. I think the Carnitine part of the molecule prevents Thyroid hormones from entering their target cells. Whenever I take ALCAR I experienced puffy, heavy eyelids and an uncomfortable depression with some irritability. I become very introverted as well. My eyes get slightly red and honestly its similar to being mildly stoned but in the worst way possible. Puffy eyelids can be a symptom of a thyroid issue. I use NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) as an Acetyl- donor alternative.
http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/15591013
"In particular, L-carnitine inhibits both triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) entry into the cell nuclei. In the randomized trial, we showed that 2 and 4 grams per day of oral L-carnitine are capable of reversing hyperthyroid symptoms (and biochemical changes in the hyperthyroid direction) as well as preventing (or minimizing) the appearance of hyperthyroid symptoms (or biochemical changes in the hyperthyroid direction)."
Hyperthyroid patients use Carnitine to effectively treat their condition. I think that says a lot. You may not have diagnosed Hashimoto's disease but I think it is important to support general thyroid health. So it might not be so healthy to supplement with high doses of ALCAR everyday like some people do, since it may be suppressing the necessary function of your thyroid. Try NAC!
