Hello,

Does anyone know some foods that contain the most Tryptophan and Tysorine?....

(non-meat).

Thanks.

Basically, there aren't that many non-animal sources of these amino acids. You can find some isolates like spirulina or fractionated vegetable protein or what-not, but not too many whole foods. Eggs are non-meat (pre-meat? meat-fruit?) and contain a good amount of all amino acids, so based on your original question, they are probably the best source in an actual whole food.

I disagree. Tryptophan and tyrosine, are in everything. You aren't going to avoid them, you aren't going to benefit by eating more of them, nor by trying to manipulate your diet so there is more of both these compounds. Added to that, they both compete with each other anyway at the BBB. So what will it achieve anyway?

The amino acid composition of foods isn't even worth thinking about. Unless you get all of your protein from vegan sources, which results in lower levels of inflammatory amino acids.

Try supplementing either amino acid by itself and you'll be lucky if it doesn't put you out of whack. Either one can be very unpleasant, with too much. And if you look into the work of Ray Peat, you'll know anyway, that tryptophan is actually an amino acid that will shorten your lifespan (similar to methionine), or, at best, worsen the quality of your lifespan considerably.

Tryptophan will make you dumb, ill and aggressive. Serious. Give it a whirl in supplement format, and see how 'wonderful' it makes you feel. 5HTP is also pretty nasty with continued use. But then, I am firmly in the Ray Peat camp with regards to serotonin.

Okay, so... without directly quoting Ray Peat, or someone quoting him, can you support the statement "Tryptophan will make you dumb, ill, and agressive"?

Don't tell me to take it myself and try it. I have. I noticed none of these effects, and it improved my sleep dramatically, leading to a much increased mood.

I've had the same effects from taking tryptophan. I fall asleep easier, sleep better, and wake up in a good mood. The main downside for me is trying to have an empty stomach towards the end of the night so I can take it effectively without it competing with protein in my stomach from meals. I can't sleep with an empty stomach, so the timing is tricky. I agree with the rest of Thorsten's post, however. A varied diet will get you most of the aminos that you need, and because of competition with the many amino acids any protein from whole food has, you probably won't notice any acute changes in mood like you would if you supplemented an amino acid in isolate on an empty stomach. Unless you have a deficiency from an unvaried diet or one low in protein, don't worry about tryptophan/tyrosine content.

Wikipedia entry:

The amino acids regarded as essential for humans are phenylalanine, valine, threonine, tryptophan, methionine, leucine, isoleucine, lysine, and histidine.

Vegan dietary site:

Your body can make non-essential amino acids, and you can get them by eating certain foods. Essential amino acids can not be made, so you must get them from a food source. The essential amino acids missing from most plant foods are lysine, tryptophan, methionine, and phenylalanine.

Medline info:

The body uses tryptophan to help make niacin and serotonin. Serotonin is thought to produce healthy sleep and a stable mood.

And, last but certainly not least, here's two pubmed studies:

Available evidence does suggest these substances are better than placebo at alleviating depression.

http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/11869656

Memory improvements following Trp loading have generally been shown in clinical and sub-clinical populations where initial serotonergic disturbances are known. Similarly, Trp loading appears to be most effective for improving mood in vulnerable subjects, and improves sleep in adults with some sleep disturbances.

From my experience 5htp was waste of money and had no positive or any significant effect at all. If you want some psychodelic experience with serotonin better try mb at 1.2-3.6mg dose. Serotoninergic ads are better choice than serotonin precusors.
