So, I use this product.  http://www.coolibar....ield/155708.uts

It claims to have a UPF (UV protection factor of 50+) Meaning roughly 2% of rays get through.

However, I have two of these, and when I put one on, I also layer the other one on top. Would this mean added protection at all? Or would the UVA rays have just as easy a time penetrating both?

The reason I ask is well, common sense would tell someone yes, you would have more protection as it is two layers, but no matter how cloudy it is UVA rays tend to have no trouble penetrating roughly to expose people to roughly 80% of their power.

Any thoughts

By the way, apparently this product works due to the fact it has titanium dioxide amongst the fabric (which has been formulated in such a way that it cannot be washed off, or anything.

One last thing.

I want to keep using these masks, they save me money on sunscreen and I believe are more effective.

But I want to purchase or create my own mask that has 100% UV protection. Do such things exist?

Just to add and I think this could be really important at least for this product and people possibly considering its purchase........

It claims upf 50+ however it uses titanium dioxide embedded in the fabric fibers.......... But we all know that titanium oxide doesn't even cover both UVA spectrums, so is it even possible for a  claim of UPF 50+ (blocking 97.5 to 98% of UV rays) is even possible?...again it uses titanium dioxide as the blocker here

Because I do not want to use a product that leaves me fairly exposed

You need to stop and really read what you just posted. What do you think we are going to think after reading such a post?

Dude you are beyond obsessive about sun protection. And that's saying a bunch cause I'm pretty damn conscious of it myself. Do you really think that one of those UPF50+ masks is not enough? That's just insane you think you need to wear 2.

That mask is giving you more protection than any sunscreen would. Assuming the mesh like area around the mouth is protecting the same amount. Which I doubt. I own one of these from Sun Precautions. Think it's a SPF100

And what about the UV ray's when you take that mask off????  You go directly from home to work, etc. right into the building wearing that thing??? Of course not. Then what about the UV ray's your getting taking it off??

no not at all, I am very active in fishing so I get a ton of uv exposure tat way, I just took it back up. I sincerely wanted to cut out that part as much as I could since I am not going to let any type of sun hold me back from it, but I do know for a fact that I am going to be doing it roughly 6 hours each day I  do it about 3 times a week. Yes, I used to fish year round. Then I stopped due to an injury. But now, it's back to my boat and I'd like to remain protected. I only also do the '2' thing due to the fact I was sent a second one free so I thought e why not. Otherwise it will just go to waste. It was simply a thought.

And also I do canoe a good bit as well as camp and I do such things year round and ould never miss out on such things even if it meant doing so with no sun protection. However, I will obviously protect myself, but since I spend so much time outside I know I am getting alot of sun exposure that way and I would say roughly 22-30 hours per week between my recreational activities so yeah

I was thinking earlier about your situation. It kinda does not add up. Your basically heliophobic yet you fish around 18 hours a week. That's a bunch of UV rays bouncing off the water. Are you dressed head to toe in full UV gear? I've done that out in a boat where only my father could see me. ...he knows I'm a bit odd though...lol

No I am a heliphobic person yes. But at the same time I do go out as well, however always with the most protection I can get. But the heliophobic part of me does get to saying, "well, am I having enough protection?"  Either way I will leave it at that I do fish a good deal but after realizing these don't actually block 100% Uv rays it threw me a good bit. There's the difference. I was under the impression they blocked either 100% but upon further investigation I was wrong. Apparently, just being fabric doesn't cut it. All this time I believed if it was a fabric touted for sunprotection, it just took care of all uv radiation. But I was wrong, hence the heliphobicness.

Regardless, yes I am quite active outside of work especially on weekends. Very much so. Never realized these UV protective fabrics actually don't have the capabilities to block 100%. I was thinking that especially if sunglasses can knock out 100% UV rays, why couldn't fabric do that as it is advertised.

Either way I was greatly wrong

I think you are more than protected from the fabric. Missing 1-2% is nothing to fear. It's better than any sunscreen your going to use. I'd be much more concerned about the unprotected parts.

Well I do also use upf clothing here and there but for my body still I always apply sunscreen anyway, so I'm certainly good there. I
