Hi Longecity, does anybody have any ideas on how to counter act Xanax's effect on sleep, or at least improve sleep quality a bit?

I'm using Xanax for Bile reflux as it's a CCK antagonist, but I find that when I take it I don't get restful sleep, which leads to stress which leads to more bile reflux.

I don't need Xanax's GABA agonism, and I've heard reports of things that agonise GABA are good at inducing sleep, but the quality of sleep is usually worse. (I find this to be the case for me)

I've tried melatonin but it makes things worse.

Two ideas I'm looking into at the moment are;

1) Raise dopamine (xanax lowers dopamine due to GABA agonism?, not entirely sure this is correct)

2) Use something to improve REM sleep, I heard XANAX disrupts this stage of sleep.

Appreciate any other ideas, thanks

Wow.. Try Betaine HCL.. with food instead for reflux.. It is also a Methyl Donor.. Or D-Limonene, which is obtained from steaming citrus peels to get the oil.. and is more powerful, again with food.

The reflux Rx kills HCL.. and lowers your absorption of nutrition.. and you end up with cancer.. I know I was upgraded to stronger and stronger Rx.. 3 times..over 25 years.. and was on the most expensive.. and got sicker and sicker every time.  I had a spot of cancer on my tongue in 1999.. and now am using the above.. and don't get sick anymore either.

Doctors are drug pusher.. they know very little about health and the immunity system.

THINK !

Thanks for the reply but, acid reflux =/= bile reflux

My situation is a little weird but something (unknown) has happened internally where it feels like my organs/intestines have shifted around causing a mild blockage, food moves very slowly through my intestines, if at all at times. (If I eat a meal it could take 3/4 days before I see it come out the other side, and that's with drinking warm water + laxatives. It would probabaly take a week or more if I didn't.

currently in diagnostic stages with ultrasounds/barium swallow tests)

Essentially the bile from the food has no where to go but up for a few days, and is causing significant damage to my esophogus as well as constant mild gastritis.

The pressure from the blockage also seems to be producing a hiatal hernia, so taking betaine is a bad idea at the moment for me. Although saying that I do take Apple cider vinegar if things get really bad.

Talking to Drs about bile reflux is like talking to a wall, so the Xanax is self prescribed.

Anyway, I appreciate the post, but back on topic...

6-8mg maybe a bit high.

Premedication with Oral Alprazolam and Melatonin Combination: A Comparison with Either Alone—A Randomized Controlled Factorial Trial

Although the exact mechanism of the action of melatonin is still not known, there is accumulating evidence that a synergy exists between the melatonergic and GABAergic systems. It has been reported that the melatonin administration is associated with significant, dose-dependent increases in GABA concentrations in the central nervous system [10]. We observed that the added dose of melatonin in combination with alprazolam caused similar levels of sedation as seen with alprazolam alone suggesting that the melatonin in doses we used did not worsen sedation levels.
