Hi

I tested low on plasma Manganese.   The range was 10-40 and my result was "<7 "
I was low-normal on Zinc and Copper.

Is it best to just add in a Mn supp (along with Zn , etc),  which would be the easiest and cheapest method by far.     This however , may cause imbalances  with other minerals long term, especially since the AI is only 2mg/day and most supps contain 4-8 times that amount.

OR

As my current Dr pointed out,  since Mn is not found by itself in nature (like most minerals ?) ,  it would be more ideal to try and obtain it from food, which would contain other minerals as well.     This may not bump my levels up much, but seems  'safer'.

What do people generally do with mineral deficiencies?   A supp or try and correct with dietary sources.

Any thoughts/advice is greatly appreciated.

Start with increasing dietary sources, retest, and if you can't get where you want to be then consider a supplement.

I divide a 5 mg Mn tablet in quarters and take every second day.

Thanks ,  that's a good approach, and luckily I have tabs and not caps, so can do this.

Did you get your levels tested, or just take as part of a general health cocktail?

For some reason Mn tests here are very expensive, considering that you need follow-ups to reevaluate. Instead I do get yearly hair tissue mineral analysis (~60 Pounds). Which tests for a few dozen minerals and heavy metal exposure all at once. Though only a fractions of those tested in HTMA are more reliable, Mn is one of them. (note: many, like Ca, Mg and Mn when very high in HTMAs also could mean depletion in the body. So it needs some self-education to know how to interpret them yourself)

An other less expensive option would be Mn dependent SOD, I haven't tried yet.
