Is Gotu Kola stimulating or promotes drowsiness/tiredness?

I have read various pages on it and I don't understand what exactly it does. I've read that it makes you tired and helps sleep, but at the same time I've read that it increases dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. I am not so interested in it if it would make me sleepier and drowsy, but I am very interested in increasing my neurotransmitters, since I am naturally low on them.

 

Perhaps it is dose-dependent? Does anybody have any experience with it?

Gotu Kola is generally considered calming but does have nootropic and mild stimulatory qualities too. So more of a day-time tranquilizer than a sleep aid. In high dose I find it directly sedative though. Gotu Kola is a selective GABA-B agonist and induces GAD enzyme, but its other mechanisms are not well understood. I remember a mention of it "regulating monoamine release" and usually an increase of their levels is noted, but that does't really explain much. Gotu Kola is an adaptogen which often do a bit of everything.

Thank you for the answer. I think it might be something I will be taking. I will still do more research on it. I saw an article stating that it is often very high in heavy metals because it easily absorbs them, which is very concerning, as we get plenty of those from regular foods already. Perhaps you or someone else has any thoughts on this?

I find it causes insomnia for me if I take in the evening or double the morning dose. It is more on the mildly stimulating side of things than a sedative. It is not as sleepy as the adaptogens ashwagandha or holy basil.
