Hello.
Once this obstacle of ROS's and loss of genetic information has been overcome, there still remains the problem that neurones cannot repair themselves. This results in deteriation of the nervous system and is seen very commonly as a problem in elderly people.
Theories on how to overcome this?
Deteriation of the nervous system.

" grow new neurons "
That is a very good suggestion and it seems we are on the verge of being able to do it. Stem cell research show great promise in this area. Recently, they found that precursor cells which were no longer stem cells but not completely differentiated could be used to create new neurons in the eye and brain. Our wonderful president vetoed the stem cell funding bill but we may have a non-neanderthal in office one of these days.

Growing new neurons is easy. Getting them to make the right connections in the brain is virtually impossible. Therefore, at this time it is better to try to rejuvenate existing neurons in order to preserve their circuitry. One way of doing this is to give them new and fresh mitochondria. A recent study indicated that mesechymal stem cells are able to donate their mitochondria to nearby cells.

correct me if I'm wrong Harold but hasn't neurogenesis occured in older individuals based on environment already?
I think it was scientific american mind if I'm not mistaken that had an article on it a little while back and the oppisite was also true that neurons can be destroyed based on certain factors as well.
